UK Youth for Nature is recruiting for a Head of Communications. About UK Youth for Nature UK Youth for Nature is the UK’s leading youth-led network calling on UK governments for urgent action to tackle the nature crisis. We are made up of a movement of young people aged from 16-35. The organisation was established in 2019, as the UK chapter of a global movement for nature, the ocean, and the climate, Youth for Our Planet. We specialise in creative campaigning that facilitates positive conversations between young people and political leaders. Our two current campaigns are Not So Freshwater, a campaign focusing on agricultural chemical pollution in freshwater systems. And Your Wild Streets, a campaign which aims to improve access to high quality nature in urban spaces. We seek to not just deliver campaigns but train the campaigner, and many of our volunteers come to us with little to no experience, from areas reaching far outside of the environmental sector. To find out more about UKY4N and our campaigning work, visit our website. Time commitment Start date: 6th January 2025, for a minimum of 12 months (including 8 weeks probation). Two additional days of paid handover in December. Part time: 2 days (16 hours) per week but flexible on working hours, our team operates different working hours Location: Fully remote, UK based Remuneration Salary: £34,000 (pro-rata). £13,600 for two days per week. Annual leave: 25 days annual leave bank holidays (pro-rata) with an additional mandatory 1 week office closure over Christmas and New Year 3% pension contribution Responsibilities Strategy: Help to build on and further develop our communication strategy to ensure UK Youth for Nature is engaging and empowering young people and has political impact for nature and wildlife Coordination: Alongside the co-directors, coordinate all communications including social media, website, newsletter and press Leadership: Act as a leader for UKY4N, leading sections of organising team meetings and setting an example for our volunteers and staff. Decision making: Be a confident decision maker, being able to explain why you have chosen to take a decision to the wider team. Whilst being able to manage the expectations and enthusiasm of our volunteers to ensure everyone feels heard and respected. Partnerships: Working with our co-directors to maintain and develop relationships with partners across, and outside of, the environmental sector to build trust, knowledge and leadership in the sector. Planning: Develop and deliver the communications with clear plans including; objectives, targets and resources. Management: With the support of the co-directors, manage the recruitment and work of graphic designers, campaign co-ordinators, and external consultants. Community management: Support and work with our volunteers to ensure they are engaged and fulfilled in their volunteering journey Monitoring: Track our communications moments, wins, and KPIs for reporting to our board and funders. Communication/public speaking: Be one of our confident UKY4N voices on social media and in the press, participating in video and campaign asset production for social media as well as providing quotes/ being interviewed by the press. Research: Keep up to date with our campaigning areas, highlighting and communicating campaigning opportunities to the wider organising team and volunteers Fundraising: Whilst this work is led by the co-directors, this role will contribute ideas and data from our communications successes and learnings into our fundraising applications and reporting Experience: We are looking for a candidate with experience in the following areas, but please note we are not expecting candidates to have experience across all of these areas. We are open to training up the candidate in areas they want to further develop. Establishing and implementing a communications strategy across Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, WordPress and Substack Experience using Canva or other graphic design/video editing software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Capcut, etc.). Understanding of visual content creation and ability to design engaging graphics for social media platforms. Experience with social media management and scheduling tools (e.g., Hootsuite, Buffer, Sprout Social, etc.). Copywriting, proofreading and editing written content, including blogs and newsletters Building and strengthening relationships with press Public affairs and targeted communications towards politicians and decision makers A good understanding of environmental communications and engagement Working independently A confident public speaker and confident in leading meetings Managing volunteers Additional information about this role: You must be available to join our weekly campaigns meetings: Tuesdays 6-7pm We operate mostly on slack and google drive, so having a knowledge of these is useful You will be joining a core team of 3 other people, two co-directors and 1 head of campaigns, as well as a large volunteer organising team.
