The Health Physics & Facility Safety Group supports the radiation protection function and the radioactive waste service at ISIS. In the workplace, the Radiation Protection Apprentice will develop the technical skills and competencies required to provide health physics monitoring support and assistance to staff and users at ISIS. The apprentice will also gain the knowledge and skills required for the safe characterisation and processing of radioactive waste prior to its safe disposal.
About the role and a summary of key duties & responsibilities
We are recruiting for a Radiation Protection Apprentice to work at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in Oxfordshire. Health Physics Surveyor is an essential role that provides support service to the operation of the ISIS Neutron and Muon Spallation Source.
The apprentice will be based in our Health Physics & Facility Safety Group where their daily duties will be varied and complemented by formal training with Bridgwater and Taunton College, where over two and a half years they will complete a Level 2 Nuclear Health Physics Monitor Apprenticeship.
The apprentice will undertake professional development and training through a mixture of online and in-person teaching. There will be 15 days of professional training at college plus additional online touchpoints. Travel expenses will be provided when attending in-person teaching.
Towards the end of the apprenticeship duration there is an End Point Assessment which includes a form of written assessment, practical assessment and a panel review of the portfolio of evidence.
Role:
* Taking readings of surface, air and personal contamination
* Detecting radiation dose rates using various detectors
* Performing calculations to assess exposure risks
* Testing and calibrating monitoring equipment
* Recording and communicating results to teams
* Supporting emergency response.
* Using overhead travelling cranes and forklift trucks
Qualifications obtained
* Level 2 Nuclear Health Physics Monitor Apprenticeship (ST0290)
* Health Physics Monitoring in the Nuclear Industry (Theory) Level 2
* Level 2 NVQ in Radiation Protection
* IOSH Working Safely
Person Specification
In order to apply for the role, we are looking for the following:
Essential:
* Achieved or predicted to achieve 2 GCSE passes at Grade C/4 or above including Maths and English (or equivalent qualifications)
* Over 18 years of age (ISIS is a radiation area and requires staff over 18)
* Interest in radiation safety
* Able to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team
* Experience of using Microsoft Office; including working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
* Interest in and enthusiasm for science
Desirable:
* Proactive attitude.
* Able to undertake calculations
* Understand the need for document control
Important Information
1. To complete the apprenticeship, you will need to evidence passes at 9-4 or A*-C in GCSE (or equivalent) Maths and English. For those sitting their GSCEs in Summer 2025, we would need evidence of your predicted grades.
