This role works alongside the relevant Locality Link Workers and New Scots to support the successful development of a new Sustainable Growing project for New Scots, based in the shared space of Eglinton Park Community Gardens. It will provide additional expertise, guidance and physical handyman/gardening skills to assist in the preparation of areas for growing vegetables and flowers and ensure ongoing successful growth and harvesting.
Time commitment: Tuesday and/or Wednesday mornings with some extra possible.
Main Tasks
1. Vegetable & flower growing. Supporting New Scots to develop gardening skills.
2. Making planters and structures as needed.
3. Supporting the project’s collaborative role within the shared gardens.
Experience required
E = Essential D = Desirable
1. Good knowledge/experience of growing vegetables/ flowers (E)
2. Patience and sensitivity to the needs and culture of New Scots (E) (Support will be offered)
3. Good people skills especially where language may be a barrier (E)
4. Reliability and commitment to the project (E)
5. Able to travel to Eglinton Park at least once a week. North Ayrshire Council supports volunteer travel expenses if required.
6. Knowledge/experience of building garden structures, planters etc (D)
Volunteers (aged 12-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
