The Role
Work at the US Field Office (Barrow-in-Furness, UK) as a Secondary Systems Commissioning (Test) Engineer embedded at the UK submarine shipbuilder, BAE Systems to support the assimilation of US Steam and Electric Plant related commissioning methodologies, to provide US best practices and to ensure the compatibility of US supplied components for the UK Next Generation Nuclear Propulsion Plant.
Synthesizes customer contractual needs and requirements into system test solutions that acknowledges technical, schedule and cost constraints. Develops and directs preparation and execution of comprehensive test plans, procedures and schedules for completing systems. Coordinates integrated testing activities. Reviews and evaluates test requirements to insure completeness of test program. Performs technical analysis of complete systems and prepares comprehensive system level evaluations.
Job Responsibilities will include; Supporting the UK S&EP Test Procedure development program. Tasks will include identification and incorporation of Lessons Learned from equivalent US documentation, aiding in the development of Test Procedure Author training methods and material, and providing technical input during UK test procedure creation and approval, Supporting UK S&EP NGNPP transition from design and test development phase of construction to the implementation and execution phase, It is desirable that the candidate has test equipment life cycle management experience, Supporting UK continuous process improvement efforts related to personnel training, test equipment design and use, test program planning documents, and Design Build Sustain activities. Continuous process improvements are focused on reducing cost and improving quality and schedule for build and test efforts, Has experience with change management and/or significant engagement with design and engineering. Especially relating to method development, Obtaining applicable US commissioning processes, procedures and tools, Mentor Test and Commissioning personnel, Provide deck-plate support as required, Participate in a knowledge capture exercise for the key UK commissioning work streams prior to completion of assignment (knowledge mapping), Has experience of a first of class, Identify, coordinate and facilitate the distribution of reach-back information and relevant experience from US programs, Identify, coordinate, and lead benchmarking, consultancy and workshop opportunities to improve UK and US processes and methods focusing on cost and schedule benefits for NGNPP design, build, and test efforts. Position is located in Barrow-in-Furness, UK.
Must Have
Lead Test Engineer (LTE) or Ship Safety Officer (SSO) or Watch Supervisor or Watch Officer Certification or Trade REC Coordinator (TRC) and Trade REC Oversight Agent (TROA) Certification and 6 years of relevant professional/exempt experience.
Nice to Have
Minimum of 10 years relevant experience in submarine power plant engineering.
Experience with the development, execution, or assessment of a new construction steam and electric plant acceptance test program for the US.
Familiarity with the roles and responsibilities of the joint test group for a US new construction submarine.
Steam and electric plant design or operations experience.
Ability to coach and mentor engineering peers.
Excellent communicator with broad and detailed knowledge of submarine test.
Willingness to relocate to the UK for a minimum of 2 years with the potential for extension. Expected start is May 2025 or earlier.
