We are looking for a Head of Product Development to join their growing team and drive product design for utility-scale thermal storage systems.
Job Overview:
As a Head of Product Development, you will be responsible for leading & executing the engineering, design and product development of their thermal storage systems at the MWh scale. You will work closely with the R&D and engineering teams to design robust, scalable, and cost-effective solutions for the commercial phase of their technology. Your expertise will guide the entire product development lifecycle, from conceptual design through to commercial product deployment.
Key Responsibilities:
* Work closely with the CEO and founding team to develop and execute a product commercialisation strategy.
* Lead the engineering, design, and product development of the entire system, initially focusing on a pilot-ready MWh-scale design product.
* Lead the design, testing, and prototyping of key system components, including heating elements, thermal insulation, heat exchangers, and electromechanical interfaces.
* Work closely with 3rd party certifying bodies (UL, DNV, Bureau Veritas) to ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and technology readiness progression (TRL-5 to TRL-9).
* Oversee the selection, testing, and qualification of materials for high-temperature and electromechanical applications. Conduct testing and validation of thermal storage materials, systems and components, working closely with the testing team. Perform thermal and mechanical analysis and simulations to optimize system efficiency, reliability, and performance.
* Lead the supply chain development for key system components, ensuring scalability and cost efficiency.
* Manage all technical documentation, including design specifications, drawings, and reports.
* Develop short-to-long-term hiring plans. Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership on the product development cycle.
Qualifications:
* A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master’s or PhD preferred).
* 7+ years of experience in mechanical engineering design, with a strong focus on high temperature thermal systems, electromechanical systems, energy storage, or related industries.
* Strong team leadership capabilities
* Proven track record in the design, development, and commercialisation of electromechanical systems, high-temperature industrial applications or energy storage systems experience preferred.
* Experience in pilot project development, installation, and operation.
* Expertise in thermal management, heat transfer, and energy efficiency.
* Strong experience with electromechanical systems, including sensors, and control interfaces.
* Experience with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and thermal/electromechanical simulation tools.
* Knowledge of materials science, particularly for high-temperature and electromechanical applications.
* Experience with prototyping, testing, and scaling mechanical and electromechanical systems.
* Outstanding project management expertise.
* Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, innovative environment.
* Excellent communication and team collaboration skills.
