We are looking to recruit a qualified and experienced craftsman (Carpenter) to join an effective and efficient maintenance team.
Overview of the Role
You will preferably have experience of working within a similar large and complex environment. You should have a flexible approach to ensure the service being delivered is efficient and effective to meet the needs of Students and Staff. You will join our maintenance team that forms part of the Estates & Facilities Directorate, which provides a wide range of support services connected with the effective management, development, and maintenance of the University. You will be part of a dedicated team delivering reactive and planned maintenance as well as small works projects where you will be central to delivering the student experience for the University. You must be able to work unsupervised, and on your own initiative, within a large and complex organisation, whilst maintaining a safe working environment for all our staff, students, and visitors.
Maintenance Carpenter Role and Responsibilities
You will carry out repairs, maintenance and other minor and small works covering new installation, general carpentry repairs, joinery, and general building, as well as assisting other trades.
* To conduct remedial and new installation of fire doors across all our residential and teaching buildings. Carry out repairs, maintenance and minor works as directed within the field of carpentry, joinery, and general building. From time to time you will be expected to help other Tradesman to complete works in other fields. As well as responsive maintenance a full schedule of Planned Preventative Maintenance will be undertaken to set target dates.
* Liaise with external contractors, regarding the University buildings.
* To deal directly with staff and students regarding repairs and maintenance and advise on technical queries and matters of safety and security.
* Undertake work in other craft disciplines from time to time including building, painting & decorating, and helping electrical & plumbing trades.
* Liaise and provide advice to external contractors undertaking repair work and advise and train caretakers undertaking minor maintenance tasks.
Maintenance Carpenter Requirements
* You should have served a recognised apprenticeship and be qualified to City and Guilds Advanced Craft Certificate Carpentry & Joinery or NVQ Level 3.
* A sound knowledge of all carpentry and joinery works within the field of Maintenance and an understanding of general building matters.
* Have considerable experience of conducting inspection, repairs and fitting new fire doors.
* Be prepared to undertake any relevant training associated with the role.
* Knowledge and understanding of all relevant Health & Safety Legislation, including Health & Safety at Work Act, Asbestos at Work Regulations and Working at Height Regulations.
* Significant practical experience will be required with evidence of appropriate competency and some training in First Aid would be advantageous.
* You will be required to hold a current driving licence.
* You will be required to travel throughout the University estate as well as in and around the West Midlands.
