An exciting opportunity as Phlebotomist has arisen to join our Pathology Department.
The post holder will be able:
* To perform venepuncture under supervision of the senior phlebotomy team and managers as designated; after achieving competence post holder will be expected to work alone when and where required.
* To follow the general policies and protocols of the department and, in association with the clinical scientific and technical staff, assist in maintaining the highest professional standards.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be required to collect samples from inpatients and patients attending outpatient clinics. They are required to liaise with clinicians and other healthcare professionals, including laboratory staff. The post holder will be required to perform a range of venepuncture techniques in a variety of clinical settings. They should be aware of the clinical conditions and precautions that are necessary for sample quality to be maintained during the venepuncture procedure and develop an awareness of requirements for site selection, correct use of tourniquet, and selection of blood sample bottles. The post holder ensures that blood sample bottles are accurately labelled in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. They must ensure that clinical samples are correctly packaged for transportation to the laboratory in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Pathology Department. The post holder should seek guidance from experienced Phlebotomists as necessary and work to relevant departmental policies and Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring that personal performance complies with ISO (International Standards Organisation). They will also be required to perform reception and telephone duties and refer more complex enquiries to a senior member of staff.
