An exciting opportunity as Phlebotomist has arisen to join our Pathology Department.
The post holder will be able:
* To perform venepuncture under supervision of the senior phlebotomy team and managers as designated; after achieving competence post holder will be expected to work alone when and where required.
* To follow the general policies and protocols of the department and, in association with the clinical scientific and technical staff, assist in maintaining the highest professional standards.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be required to:
1. Collect samples from inpatients and patients attending outpatient clinics.
2. Liaise with clinicians and other healthcare professionals including laboratory staff.
3. Perform a range of venepuncture techniques in a variety of clinical settings.
4. Be aware of the clinical conditions and precautions necessary for sample quality maintenance during the venepuncture procedure, including site selection, correct use of tourniquet, and selection of blood sample bottles.
5. Ensure that blood sample bottles are accurately labelled in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
6. Ensure that clinical samples are correctly packaged for transportation to the laboratory in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Pathology Department.
7. Seek guidance from experienced Phlebotomists as necessary.
8. Work to relevant departmental policies and Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring compliance with ISO (International Standards Organisation).
9. Perform reception and telephone duties and refer more complex inquiries to a senior member of staff.
