BMW Group Plant Hams Hall is a modern, state-of-the-art engine manufacturing facility, located just outside Birmingham, UK. Producing the latest generation of three and four cylinder petrol engines, and precision machining key engine components, the plant has recently celebrated 20 years of successful production. Operating seven days a week, with more than one engine rolling off the line per minute, the plant plays a key role in BMW Group’s global production network, supplying engines for BMW and MINI, including some of the latest plug-in hybrid vehicles.
BMW Plant Hams Hall, Birmingham – Communications & Events – 13 Months Placement (July 2025)
If you’re a bright, energetic and creative student who is seeking an exciting challenge for your placement year, then we have an exceptional opportunity for you. We are looking for enthusiastic and passionate people to join the busy communications team based at our Hams Hall engine manufacturing plant (near Birmingham), working across communications and events.
BMW Group Plant Hams Hall is a modern, state-of-the-art engine manufacturing facility, located not far from Birmingham, UK. The plant, employing over 1,000 people, plays a key role in BMW Group’s manufacture of the latest generation of high-tech engines and the precision machining of key engine components.

What awaits you?
In this role you will have your own tasks and projects as well as supporting the communications manager(s) in their daily work.
1. There are plenty of topics and stories you will get involved with to create and push out engaging content to employees. This will be across a range of media channels such as the intranet, employee app and digital signage. You will also take ownership for managing some of these channels.
2. Supporting the communications manager and sometimes the wider UK communications team, you will work on generating plant information and story ideas to support our engagement and dialogue with external stakeholders.
3. Either taking the lead or in a supporting role, you will get involved in the planning, organisation and execution of events and visits, large and small, for a variety of audiences.
4. Traditionally, our interns always take the lead on working with our house charity to bring our partnership to life, creating awareness, enthusing engagement among our workforce and organising fundraising events.
5. Improving and innovating is important, so you will be contributing to the further development of how we do things. This could be rolling out new initiatives, improving or introducing new communications channels and ensuring we are up to date with the latest BMW Group standards.
6. The everyday stuff is just as important, so you will support the department in keeping on top of our annual planner, collating communication measures for reporting, photo archiving, escorting photographers and film crews, updating plant information and a little admin here and there to keep everything in good shape!
No two days will be the same and although office-based, your placement will include a fair proportion of your time spent on the shop floor liaising with people working at all levels within the factory. In order to support the team you will be asked to be flexible with your working hours and from time to time there may be travel required to other BMW Group sites in the UK.
To be considered for this role you’ll need to be passionate about communicating and engaging with people and be able to demonstrate this clearly through your interests and achievements.
You will need to have excellent written and spoken English skills and the ability to communicate and build relationships at all levels is essential. An awareness of, and interest in, current affairs, as well as an eye for what makes a good story will help you make a strong contribution to the team. You must be comfortable using and learning about a range of IT software and content management systems. Basic photography and photo editing are all part of the role and further digital media skills would enhance what you bring to the table. You will need to be highly organised and comfortable working in a manufacturing environment.
We are a small team, so above all you must be flexible, proactive and resilient with a ‘hands on’ approach and a positive ‘can-do’ attitude. A valid driving licence and the ability to reach the plant around flexible working hours is essential.
Qualifications & Skills:
7. Studying towards a Bachelor's degree in Business, Media, Communications, Marketing, Events Management, English, Social Sciences or another related field and on track to receive a 2:2 or above.
8. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated passion for engaging with and building relationships with people.
9. You will need to be flexible with working hours and potential travel to other BMW Group sites in the UK (full driving licence required) to support various projects and events.
10. Awareness and interest in current affairs with an eye for what makes an attractive potential story.
11. Basic photography and photo editing skills- further digital media skills such as graphic design, film and other forms of media would enhance your application.
12. Ambition to comfortably use and learn about a range of IT software and content management systems.
13. Resilient with excellent organisation skills and a 'hands on', proactive approach.
