Job Summary

The Anaesthetics department currently has 30 substantive Consultant Anaesthetists, 13 Specialty Doctors and 2 Associate Specialists. The trainee establishment consists of eight core trainees, together with four intermediate and higher-level trainees all rotating from the South Yorkshire Anaesthetic Training Rotation. The department also has one Foundation Year 2 doctor on a 4-month rotation within critical care.
Non-consultant colleagues are represented in senior roles in our department and are very much valued for their clinical and non-clinical experience and capabilities.
Main Duties of the Job
We are pleased to offer the opportunity for 2 enthusiastic anaesthetic doctors with well-rounded training to join an existing team of 28 Consultants, 12 Specialty Doctors and two Associate Specialists. Post 1 will be a permanent contract and Post 2 will be a fixed term post for 12 months.
The job plan for this role will include 8.5 PA direct clinical contact including an average of 1.5 SPA per week. DCC will include providing peri-operative care for elective lists for a variety of surgical specialties and supporting the on-call rota (long days and nights including weekends). Job Responsibilities
The Post
The successful candidates will share responsibilities within the department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine. The successful candidate will be required to provide 8.5 PA per week of clinical activity arranged as daytime and out of hours working and 1.5 PA per week of SPA. Additional clinical PAs may be available dependent upon the needs of the anaesthetic department, and the appointee will be encouraged to take on additional SPA roles determined by their interests and the needs of the department.
Critical Care Unit
Critical Care Medicine cover is provided by two consultants on weekdays. One Consultant provides cover from 0800 to 2130 on the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and the other provides cover between 0800 and 1800 on the High Dependency Unit (HDU).
Anaesthetics
Each theatre session is 1.33 PAs or 5 hours 20 minutes, which includes 1 hour for pre-operative assessment and post-operative care. The theatre start time for the morning list is 0830 and for the afternoon list is 1345.
Specialty doctors provide out of hours cover as part of a mixed rota made up of other SAS colleagues, ST trainees, senior clinical fellows and consultant colleagues. There are three resident doctors overnight; a successful applicant would be one of these, covering theatres, labour ward and ITU as a team with a consultant on call from home.
At the weekend, there is a larger team in the day to cover dedicated ITU consultant ward rounds and trauma and similar cover at night.
Person Specification
Education and Teaching
* Demonstrates a commitment to the delivery of high-quality teaching and training to junior colleagues and multidisciplinary teams.
Experience
* A demonstrable amount of experience in anaesthesia commensurate with basic anaesthetic training.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
Qualifications
* MBChB or equivalent.
* Full registration and a licence to practise with the GMC.
* Evidence of basic level anaesthetic competencies or evidence that they will have these at the time of taking up the post.
