Working in a small team, you'll help maintain the building fabric of cottages, houses, farms, and commercial premises primarily on the Killerton Estate just east of Exeter. You'll ideally be a builder or tradesperson with a breadth of skills to take on a variety of work, problem-solving, and then delivering the work. Preferably, you'll have experience in wet trades including plastering and tiling, and masonry. The use and understanding of traditional materials, such as lime, would be an advantage. Working pattern is 0800-1600 Mon to Fri. No weekends or Bank Holidays. What it's like to work here: You'll work as a skilled tradesperson from a traditional Estate Yard workshop which is integral with Killerton House in rural mid Devon. The Estate Yard team has supported the Killerton Estate for hundreds of years, and you will become a part of that historic heritage. The Killerton Estate comprises many types of historic buildings and construction types, from farmhouses with medieval roots to late 19th century cottages and modern structures. They all present different and interesting challenges. This is where the majority of your time will be spent; however, occasionally we support other members of our team across Devon. The wider team that we are part of, in supporting the National Trust's leased estate across Devon, is supported by Building Surveyors and Estate Managers, Lettings Officers, and other Building Supervisors. We work together to deliver a safe and comfortable environment for our tenanted properties. You'll also be introduced to much wider work than just construction, with the National Trust taking a leading role in reversing nature's decline and improving land, air, and water condition to combat climate change. What you'll be doing: Variety is guaranteed with no two days being the same. The repair tasks to building fabric are sometimes complemented with minor refurbishment works or new construction. You'll work in a team of two with a Building Supervisor who has overall control. Your team will be balanced so you can assist one another with different skills. The overall aim is to provide an efficient first-line building maintenance capability for our properties and their occupants. Larger or more complex tasks are carried out by established supply chain contractors, and occasionally you would work alongside them. It's all about a team effort. All necessary training, clothing, vehicles, tools, and PPE are included. A laptop for use in the office will be provided, and some knowledge and experience of using IT is an advantage. Who we're looking for: Significant practical experience in the construction industry, supported with qualifications to NVQ level 3 or equivalent experience A competent use of standard machinery Familiarity with the use and maintenance of personal protective equipment Good written and verbal communication skills Knowledge of relevant health and safety compliance requirements Good organisational skills and attention to detail Good IT skills (Microsoft Office) The package: The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong.
