Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with proven expertise in the design, development, and analysis of high–precision mechanical systems to join a fast-growing engineering firm. This is a Monday to Friday position, onsite, up to GBP70,000 p.a.
This engineering firm has been in business for over 35 years and has recently won 2 large contracts to build bespoke testing equipment for the automotive industry.
The Senior Mechanical Engineer must have a minimum of five years' experience in mechanical design and demonstrate technical proficiency in fabrication, metal components, and ideally, some motion systems.
This is an exciting project for a competent and independent Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – to join a team of enthusiastic, passionate engineers. It is a tight team of 20 superb engineers. Work on some varied and exciting projects! Lots of autonomy.
Role Overview:
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will take ownership of mechanical design projects, focusing on the creation and optimization of components and assemblies. The role demands a high level of technical expertise in mechanical engineering and the ability to be given a specification and run with it, with very little supervision.
The Mechanical Design Engineer will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to deliver innovative, high–quality solutions to clients. In addition to the 2 pressing test equipment deliveries, they also work in aerospace, motorsport, renewables, and rail.
Responsibilities:
* Develop and refine mechanical designs using SolidWorks, CATIA (or similar CAD package), ensuring compliance with engineering standards and tolerances.
* Design components and systems involving fabrication, metal materials, and precision equipment.
* Conduct bolt calculations, stress analysis, and, where applicable, utilize finite element analysis (FEA) to validate designs.
* Integrate and support motion systems, including servo motors, sensors, and associated control mechanisms.
* Collaborate with electrical engineers to ensure proper integration of electromechanical components.
* Prepare detailed technical documentation, including engineering drawings, specifications, and test plans.
* Support the manufacturing team during prototyping and production phases.
Qualifications and Skills:
* 5+ years experience in mechanical design engineering, with a focus on high–precision equipment and systems.
* Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
* Strong knowledge of fabrication processes, material selection, and metal component design.
* Familiarity with motion control systems, including servo motors and sensors.
* Experience with bolt and fastener calculations, stress analysis, and FEA tools.
* Basic electrical knowledge to facilitate the integration of mechanical and electrical systems.
* Strong problem–solving skills and the ability to work within tight tolerances.
Preferred Skills:
* Experience in designing for automated or motion–controlled systems.
* Understanding of safety and regulatory standards for mechanical and electromechanical systems.
The successful Senior Mechanical Engineer will ideally have experience in the automotive and/or industrial automation industry.
