Biomedical Scientists are responsible for the delivery of a diagnostic service by preparing, processing and performing complex Biochemistry diagnostic investigations in accordance with agreed protocols and standard operational procedures. You will be autonomous and able to work alone out of hours as required.
Main duties of the job
The BMS role:
1. Supports the specialist and senior team and is able to supervise the other BMS staff, trainees, Associate Practitioners and MLAs.
2. Rotate through all areas of the Biochemistry lab, both automation and manual.
3. Able to follow SOPs.
4. Maintenance and review of SOPs.
5. Maintenance and cleaning of equipment used in the department.
6. Will act as a deputy in an area of the lab and be responsible for all documentation and techniques in that area.
7. Assists in maintaining appropriate internal and external quality assurance to recognise poor performance and act accordingly.
8. Assists with the receipt of goods and maintenance of consumable stocks.
9. Is aware of the cost of resources and to work as economically as practical in achieving objectives.
10. Suggests ways to improve working practices.
11. Performs any other duties, commensurate with the post and in the interest of the service.
Job responsibilities
Main Duties/ Responsibilities
1. To receive specimens and check information and providing it meets acceptance criteria prepare for analysis.
2. To use the laboratory information system, as appropriate to the post.
3. To perform a range of complex tests, assays and the operation of automated instruments following standard operational procedures and validate according to departmental policy.
4. To interpret and validate analytical results, referring abnormalities, as appropriate, according to SOP.
5. To maintain appropriate internal and external quality assurance, informing Senior Biomedical scientist of non-conformance issues.
6. To store processed specimens, assist in retrieval and disposal as necessary.
7. To separate and prepare specimens for referral by post to external laboratories.
8. To receive and process goods as appropriate and monitor and maintain consumable stocks.
9. To be aware of the cost of resources and to work as economically as practical in achieving objectives.
10. Ensure compliance with good work practices required for the standards of UKAS ISO15189.
11. Deal with result enquiries by telephone both from the hospital computer system and ongoing sample processing.
12. Enter the results, both internal laboratory findings and external reference laboratory requested results onto the hospital computer system.
13. Ensure appropriate and safe disposal of laboratory waste is followed.
14. Follow laboratory Health and Safety policies, including treatment and disposal of spills.
15. Manual handling of bulky and awkward loads.
16. Demonstrate and train junior members of staff in all aspects of the correct handling and processing of samples, ensuring they adhere to Health and Safety policies.
17. Advise and guide junior members of staff in the day-to-day maintenance of consumables where necessary.
18. Plan daily activities to ensure bench work is efficiently and correctly completed.
19. Participate in out-of-hours service by local agreement.
20. Participate in laboratory meetings and staff updates.
21. Participate in annual joint staff review (appraisal).
22. Ensure continued professional development is current and ongoing.
Education & Development
1. To participate in the Department Training programme and Performance Appraisal Scheme.
2. Maintain a record of training as proof of competency, updating when equipment or procedure change to enable completion of specialist portfolio for completion of specialist diploma.
3. To partake in CPD in order to maintain HCPC registration.
4. To participate in training of staff or those not familiar with a duty, if appropriate.
5. To act as a mentor for MLA or more junior staff.
6. To attend and participate in training and information meetings held within the department.
7. To attend all mandatory training.

Skills and Knowledge

* Experience of working in laboratory post registration.

* Registration portfolio or others.
* Evidence of Continuous Professional development.
