Are you enthusiastic about working for a community enterprise, with excellent communication skills and a passion for customer service? We are looking for someone who can lead a small team of volunteer assistants in delivering excellent service to our customers.
Our community-owned village shop in Seaview is looking to recruit a part-time supervisor to a permanent post.
The weekly hours are on Saturdays and Sundays, varying between 11.25 hours (November to Easter), 15 hours (Easter to October), and 17 hours per week (the six weeks at the end of July and through August). There will be the possibility of additional hours by agreement on an ad hoc basis. We pay the National Living Wage (currently £11.44 per hour, rising to £12.21 in April 2025).
Our shop opens at 8.30am and closes at midday, seven days a week, and reopens in the afternoons from 4pm to 6pm. In the winter, we close on Sunday and Monday afternoons, and in August we open for an additional hour each afternoon. You will start work before the shop opens and finish after it closes, enabling a range of tasks to be carried out. The times will vary slightly according to the season.
You will be supported by a team of volunteers during both shifts each day, with between one and three volunteers present at any time. These volunteers are mostly already experienced in the shop's operations, although you will be expected to provide support to any new volunteers working on your shifts.
You will provide excellent service to our customers, ensuring a friendly welcome and efficient service. You will ensure our procedures are followed, either by carrying them out personally or by ensuring one of the volunteer team has carried them out.
You will oversee operation of the shop's ICR tills system and the completion of cashing-up routines at the conclusion of each shift. You will also be responsible for overseeing regulated requirements such as food safety and alcohol sales.
The successful candidate must demonstrate qualities of reliability and responsibility in overseeing a small but busy retail operation. Some previous retail sector experience is desirable, preferably with food and drink sales, though not essential. Experience of working with volunteers would also be an advantage.
Satisfactory references must be provided (following the interview).
Your application, with CV and a covering statement (500 words maximum) outlining why you are suitable for the role, should be sent to rowan.rtaylor@gmail.com by 5pm on 27 January. (Please note: if we receive sufficient applications, we may close the process early.)
