Job summary
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Lead Biomedical Scientist to head our Immunohistochemistry (IHC) section. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in IHC and a passion for innovation and quality in laboratory services. This leadership role involves managing the day-to-day operations of the IHC section, developing new protocols, troubleshooting, training staff, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.
Main duties of the job
1. Oversee and manage the daily operations of the IHC section to maintain high-quality standards.
2. Lead and mentor a team of Biomedical Scientists (BMS) and Associate Practitioners (AP) in IHC-related processes.
3. Troubleshoot IHC testing and validate new and existing antibodies.
4. Develop and implement new techniques, processes, and technologies related to IHC.
5. Participate actively in quality management activities, including audits, data analysis, and service quality improvements.
6. Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and maintain equipment according to protocols.
7. Actively participate in quality management activities, including audits, service quality improvements, and compliance with ISO 15189:2022 standards.

Job responsibilities
Laboratory Testing
8. To lead and develop the service by having expert knowledge and experience in immunohistochemistry techniques
9. To troubleshoot IHC testing
10. To maintain the IHC equipment and report any issues as per current protocols
11. To perform all Histopathology technical procedures in use in the department to a high-quality standard.
12. To support the digital pathology workflow.
13. To support provision of the extended hours service to meet operational requirements as appropriate.
14. To advise the laboratory manager of any technical or operational problems as they arise and offer solutions.
15. To perform stock-take in the IHC area
People Management
16. Provide leadership, supervision and mentoring of staff as required.
17. To provide training to BMS and AP staff on all IHC related processes
18. Assist in organising training and competency assessment of staff ensuring compliance with company and professional body requirements.
19. Assist in designing and implementing training schedules, programmes and sessions to meet the requirements of the Company and the IBMS.
20. Assist in training and developing associate practitioners and placement students to obtain the registration portfolio.
Audit & Governance
21. Be involved in service quality improvements
22. Assist with the writing and review of procedures and methods
23. Complete audits in line with the audit schedule
24. Organise testing of NEQAS materials, review of results and action any EQA failures
25. Provide data analysis and reports to support the various company meetings as required
26. Participate in annual performance appraisal process

44. Completion of specialist portfolio or equivalent
