Job Purpose
To contribute to the delivery of an excellent student experience by contributing to teaching, assessment and administration processes primarily associated with undergraduate programmes and, where appropriate, undertake scholarship to enhance learning and teaching. Specific contributions will include delivery of teaching and assessment in:
1. data analysis (including statistics), across the Life Sciences Portfolio.
2. working with the Level-1 teaching team to further develop the data analysis and statistics provision in our curriculum. Specifically using R to deliver the vertical curriculum needs of our degrees.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Deliver a range of teaching, supervision and assessment activities across undergraduate programmes within the Life Sciences Portfolio.
2. Carry out course administration within required timescales, in particular assessment requirements and timely and constructive feedback on assessment.
3. Contribute to the on-going development and design of the curriculum in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning and assessment in the discipline and/or profession.
4. Make effective use of learning technologies to support and enhance course delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment. This may involve blended and/or online provision.
5. Ensure an inclusive and evidence-based approach to facilitating learning in a range of delivery formats such as tutorials, lectures, problem based learning, that promotes student participation and learning outcome attainment.
6. Engage in scholarship of education as appropriate. Attend and participate in appropriate seminars and conferences to support research-led teaching, scholarship and/or professional practice in your disciplinary area.
7. Develop effective working relationships with students and, in partnership with relevant student services teams, respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.
8. Support colleagues to develop relationships with external stakeholders in support of knowledge exchange, public understanding and appropriate forms of outreach such as widening access.
9. Participate in local activities associated with student recruitment (e.g. open days), orientation and induction and other School and University initiatives such as support for student transitions, employability and student mobility as appropriate.
10. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
11. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School or Associate Dean.
12. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, Inspiring People Changing The World.
Qualifications/Knowledge
Essential:
1. A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in a related discipline and teaching experience.
2. A2. Up-to-date knowledge and specialist understanding in the field of molecular biology with an ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students to inspire learning and to provide pastoral care to students within the subject area.
3. A3. A comprehensive knowledge of data analysis using R, including common basic statistics tests, data visualisation and the use of the general linear model.
Desirable:
1. B1. Knowledge of education-related quality assurance practices.

1. C1. Evidence of excellent or appropriate organizational and administrative skills.
2. C2. Excellent oral and written communications.

Experience
Essential:
1. E1. Demonstrable teaching experience in a relevant area of Life Sciences.
2. E2. Practical experience using R for analysing biological data.
3. E3. Experience of teaching and developing R related resources suitable of undergraduate students.
4. E4. Experience in communicating complex or conceptual ideas.
Desirable:
1. F1. Experience in contributing to the design, review and/or enhancement of course content or assessment.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £40,247 - £45,163 per annum. This post is full time and to cover maternity leave for up to 12 months or until the substantive postholder returns.
