The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity has arisen with our leading client for an experienced Senior Mechanical Designer to become responsible for both 2D and 3D design outputs, ensuring that designs are fit for purpose from concept through to manufacturing support. In this role, you will also collaborate closely with multi-disciplinary engineering teams and provide design governance to maintain the highest technical standards and ensure the customers program continues to move forwards.
Contract - This role has been deemed inside IR35
Duration: 12 months
Location: Warrington / Hybrid
Your duties and responsibilities will be
Design Development and Review: Produce and review detailed 2D and 3D designs, technical specifications, and other outputs for mechanical systems, ensuring adherence to best practices in design configuration, documentation, and CAD output management.
Project Delivery: Lead technical aspects of design projects, including design iteration, output production, defect resolution, obsolescence management, and capability upgrades to meet contract objectives.
Technical Oversight: Provide guidance on design methodologies, tool selection, and technical problem-solving. Ensure that all work aligns with ISO standards, regulatory requirements, and Health & Safety protocols.
Problem Resolution and Continuous Improvement: Address production and technical queries related to manufacturing and installation issues and contribute to continuous improvement by implementing learnings from project experiences.
Documentation and Standards Compliance: Manage technical documentation, ensuring alignment with project specifications, and apply relevant engineering standards, codes, and procedures to maintain compliance and quality.
Safety and Compliance: Support the Product Safety Assessment process to meet safety standards and reduce risk, ensuring all designs adhere to regulatory and safety requirements.
Leadership and Mentorship: Support a team of junior designers, allocating tasks, and providing technical oversight to ensure quality across design outputs. Review drawings and ensure effective interdisciplinary coordination.
Client and Stakeholder Management: Act as the primary technical contact for professional engineering colleagues and client stakeholders, fostering strong relationships, managing expectations, and communicating progress effectively.
Innovation and Best Practices: Keep abreast of industry developments in design techniques and standards, fostering best practices within the team and driving technical and cultural advancements.
Brand Advocacy: Champion the client's brand within the workplace, promoting its values, standards, and commitment to quality and innovation across all project interactions and team activities.You will have the following qualifications & experience
Minimum HNC/HND in Engineering or equivalent experience.
Demonstrated expertise in mechanical design, with a track record of developing and supporting designs for tooling and high-integrity equipment in regulated environments.
Experience with mechanical handling systems design, including hazard management, defect rectification, and lifecycle support.
Advanced proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD, specifically Autodesk Inventor, and familiarity with technical configuration management and document control systems.
Strong knowledge of material properties, handling requirements, and design for manufacturability (DFM), particularly in relation to safety and compliance requirements.
Proven experience in stakeholder and customer engagement, with the ability to present and review designs confidently and professionally.
Strong understanding of H&S regulations and practices in design, with a knowledge of risk assessment techniques such as HAZID and ALARP.
Working towards or has membership of a recognised Engineering professional body or institution, preferably Incorporated or Chartered.It’s great if you also have the following
Direct experience in the nuclear industry, especially in designing to standards for mechanical handling and movement systems (e.g., BS EN 1993, BS EN 13001, BS EN 15011).
Good working knowledge of industry and nuclear standards and how to apply them to the contract and equipment. Such as ASME 3NC & 3ND – Rules for Construction of Nuclear Facility Components.
Familiarity with nuclear-grade materials and manufacturing techniques, including machining, casting, and metallurgy.
Knowledge of engineering codes related to small handling equipment (gloveboxes), which may apply in nuclear contexts.
Proficient in MRP and ERP systems, with a strong emphasis on SAP, enabling efficient management of resources, inventory control, and production planning to allow the program to move into build.Get in touch now
