South Tynesideand Sunderland Foundation Trust (STSFT) are looking to fill a SpecialistPalliative Care consultant post in the Sunderland locality, based at StBenedicts Hospice and Centre for Specialist Palliative Care. The post isprimarily community based in Sunderland and supporting the delivery ofeducation, plus on call cover for the 14-bedded IPU based at St BenedictsHospice.
This post isbased in St Benedicts Hospice delivering Specialist Palliative Medicine acrossSunderland for MDT working, on call, education and peer support, providingconsultant-led care to community palliative care services outpatient servicesand delivering education.
The SpecialistPalliative Care Teams in South Tyneside and Sunderland are well established andhave been steadily developed, providing integrated and multi-disciplinaryservices in both localities.
Main duties of the job
This post willbe an integral part of an established specialist palliative care medical teamproviding consultant-led community and inpatient hospice care. The role offersan excellent opportunity to influence palliative and end of life care services,and to make a meaningful difference to people at the end of their life andtheir families.
The appointeewill be jointly, with the other consultants, registrars and non-consultant careergrade doctors, support the wider Multi-Disciplinary team. Much of this will bein the form of advice and support to the experienced specialist nursing team.
The appointeewill be expected to contribute to leadership, education, policy and guidancedevelopment across the healthcare community.

Consultant in Palliative Medicine - 8 PA's
The appointee will have responsibility for the training andsupervision of junior medical staff and will devote time to this activity on aregular basis. If appropriate, theappointee will be named in the contracts of Doctors in training grades as theperson responsible for overseeing their training and as the initial source ofadvice to such Doctors on their careers.
The appointee will be expected to work with managers andprofessional colleagues in the efficient running of services and willparticipate in, with consultant colleagues, the medical contribution tomanagement. Subject to the provision ofthe Terms and Conditions of Service, the appointee will be expected to observethe Trusts agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with theprofession on clinical matters, and to follow the standing orders and financialinstruction of the Trust.
In particular, where the appointee manages employees of theTrust, he/she will be expected to follow Trust employment and personnelpolicies/procedures. The appointee willbe expected to make sure that there are adequate arrangements for hospitalstaff included in the care of his/her patients to be able to contact theappointee when necessary.
