Role Summary
We are seeking a self-motivated and enthusiastic Animal Technician to join our dynamic research team. The successful applicant will conduct in vivo animal experiments; maintain detailed animal records and datasets; and ensure that studies are performed according to good practice, current guidance, and regulatory and/or legislative requirements. The successful applicant will be expected to work unsupervised after induction training.
The impact you will have at Metsera
Under the guidance of the Research Director, the applicant's main role will be to conduct animal research and management. This includes: Providing excellent care, welfare, and husbandry to laboratory animals, specifically mice and rats
* Complying with all relevant legislation, for example, Animals (Scientific Procedures Act)1986 and Health and Safety Regulations
* Performing culls and carrying out non-surgical regulated procedures
* Applying and promoting the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement)
* Working to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
* Maintaining accurate written and computer-based records for all studies
* Analysing large datasets and generating research reports
From time to time, other duties may include
* Performing ELISAs or other biological assays to support the research outcomes of in-vivo studies
* Ordering of animals and chemical or biological reagents
* Undertaking any necessary training and/or development
* Attendance of relevant meetings
* Carrying out other such tasks as are necessary to assist in the smooth and efficient operation of the laboratory and facilities, including cleaning and maintenance
In addition to the above, the post-holder may also be required to undertake other duties, which are broadly in line with the above key responsibilities.
Qualifications
* BSc or higher in a related scientific discipline, or have equivalent academic, industrial, or commercial experience
* Home Office Personal License (PIL AB)
* Experience working with both mice and rats
* Practical experience within a research environment
* Knowledge of research methods and statistical procedures
* Awareness of emerging obesity pharmacotherapies
* Fit to meet the demands of the role, including frequent carrying and lifting
Key competencies
* Confident at handling mice and rats
* Proficient at subcutaneous injections (mice and rats)
* Proficient at intraperitoneal injections (mice)
* Proficient at tail venesections and blood sampling or collecting (mice and rats)
* Skilled at performing ELISAs or other biological assays
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Able to self-prioritise and mange own work with minimal supervision
* Able to analyse and present data via GraphPad Prism
* Have a co-operative, flexible attitude towards work
* Disciplined and considerate of confidentiality and security at all times
* Willingness to undertake any necessary training required for the role
