The Department of Mental Health, Area Residential Program is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Direct Care Worker with knowledge of the requirements of providing 24/7 residential care in a group living environment. The MHW IV serves in a supervisory role at the primary residence assigned but, along with all Direct Care staff, this individual will also function as a MHW across the program as needed. In this important role, this person assures the implementation of Individual Action Plans; acts as an advocate for assigned persons served, completes all necessary documentation and record keeping, maintaining a Person Centered atmosphere and professional performance, has knowledge of DMH Residential regulations and program procedures, supervises other assigned staff on shift, and assures that information is shared as needed between shifts, among work sites, with the Shift Supervisor, and performs related work as required.
Please Note: The selected candidate will work (40 hours) Monday to Friday from 11pm to 7am with Sunday and Saturday as the days off. Employees in this position will be required to perform mandatory overtime.
Duties and Responsibilities
* Assist the Residential Supervisor and provide supervision to other MHW staff as assigned.
* Provide the shift with a person in charge as needed.
* Assist the Residential Supervisor in completing written evaluations of direct reporting staff as assigned.
* Read pertinent records and documentation & communicate all pertinent information to other staff with a need to know and inform supervisor or designee of any critical information.
* Assist in the development, understanding, and implementation of Individual Action Plans of those that are assigned.
* Assist persons served in obtaining and maintaining benefits and entitlements.
* Supervise and/or assist persons served in managing personal money on a day-to-day basis.
* Educate persons served regarding transportation options to increase independence.
* Transport persons to all necessary appointments and activities.
* Assist persons served in development of independent living skills.
* Provide an oral shift report to at least one member of the oncoming shift.
* Notify supervisor of any pertinent information including documentation of incidents.
* Complete and submit audits of assigned medical records within prescribed timelines.
Required Qualifications
* Ability to read, write, speak and comprehend English.
* Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain harmonious working relationships.
* Ability to remain calm, rational and react quickly in emergency situations.
* Experience and/or knowledge of human services.
Special Requirements
Employees assigned to a work unit where the Medication Administration Program (MAP) is used are required to pass MAP certification within 6 months of entering the position. Possession of a current and valid class D Motor Vehicle Operator’s license is required for this function.
Working Conditions
While performing the duties of this position, incumbents work under stressful situations and under time pressures. Applicants may be exposed to verbal and/or physical confrontations and potentially dangerous environments. Incumbents will work weekends and holidays and may work extended hours.
About the On Grounds Program
The On Grounds Program is part of the Taunton/Attleboro Site that transitions clients from an inpatient setting to a more independent community living setting. The Program is staffed 24 hours a day/7 days a week.
