Description
IBSS is seeking a Full Time Ocean Color Remote Sensing Specialist to work with a team of federal scientists at NOAA and NASA to compile and collect in situ optical and pigment measurements and create operational ocean color products relevant to fisheries science and ecosystem-based management. The purpose of this work is to develop accurate ocean color algorithms in the coastal ocean.
The Ocean Color Remote Sensing Specialist will work independently and with fisheries science centers to compile a quality-controlled database of all the relevant pigment and other relevant optical and environmental data. The specialist will also assemble time/space-matched satellite (or in situ) remote sensing reflectance data and heritage chlorophyll products. These paired data will be used for development and testing, and provide region-specific feedback on algorithm performance. Results will be shared for iterative collaboration during the active product development phase to produce coastal chlorophyll-a products.
The period of performance for this role is from March 1, 2025, to September 30, 2026.
Key Tasks:
* Phase 1
o Identify key contacts at all NOAA Fisheries Science Centers, NESDIS STAR, and NASA.
o Identify existing databases of pigment data, focusing on coastal/shelf waters.
o Compile a comprehensive in situ dataset of quality-controlled radiometry, inherent optical properties, phytoplankton pigments, and other relevant environmental products by data mining existing observations and collecting additional observations on planned calibration/validation cruises.
* Phase 2
o Develop code to acquire, compile, and assess in situ data and to compare data with gridded remote sensing products.
o Work with partners to test, refine, and validate pigment algorithms from observations and identify additional products for development.
o Collaborate with academic and federal colleagues to align activities with the ocean-color community of practice.
o Produce and contribute to the development and publication of scientific presentations, technical documentation, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and outreach products.
Required Skills /Education/ Certifications & Qualifications:
* Master's degree in marine science, oceanography, or related field, PhD preferred.
* Extensive experience with ocean color remote sensing.
* Experience with coding and statistical software (Python, IDL or Matlab preferred).
* Experience working with gridded georeference data.
* Proficient skills in communicating scientific results.
* The ability to work independently and collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team.
Desired Skills:
* Familiarity with in situ phytoplankton pigment collection.
* Experience developing remote sensing algorithms.
* Knowledge of Open Science principles and experience with version control software (GitHub preferred).
