About Q:alliance:
Q:alliance (also known as ‘Q’) is a registered charity that provides support, information, and empowerment for the LGBTQ+ people who live, work, and play in Milton Keynes and surrounding areas.
We were established by a merger of two key LGBTQ+ projects in Milton Keynes:
1. Lesbian and Gay Link, established first as the lesbian and gay helpline in 1975
2. Youthline, the award-winning charity established in 1985
The word ‘alliance’ was purposely chosen to ensure that we worked with other local organisations and groups to deliver for our community.
We’re managed and run by local LGBTQ+ community members and active allies who have detailed knowledge of the issues and challenges that organisations and individuals face locally, and who have a deep passion and commitment to working for change.
Our purpose is to cultivate connections and grow inclusive and safe spaces for our LGBTQ+ community.
Role Description:
Q:alliance is seeking a skilled and experienced Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees. The Treasurer plays a pivotal role in overseeing the financial health of our organisation, and we are looking for someone who is not only passionate about LGBTQ+ rights but also a qualified accountant. You will also need to obtain a basic DBS check to ensure our communities are safeguarded appropriately.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Financial Oversight
o Oversee the financial affairs of Q:alliance, including budgeting, financial reporting, and cash flow management.
o Ensure the organisation operates within its financial policies and relevant legal and regulatory requirements.
o Oversee the processing of payroll.
2. Financial Strategy
o Collaborate with the Board to develop and implement financial strategies that align with the organisation's purpose and charitable objects.
o Provide financial guidance and recommendations to support effective decision-making.
3. Financial Reporting
o In collaboration with the CEO, oversee the regular financial reports to the Board, and where necessary, to external stakeholders.
o In collaboration with the CEO and Finance Coordinator, prepare the financial statements for auditing or regulatory purposes.
4. Compliance and Risk Management
o Ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations and reporting requirements.
o Identify and mitigate financial risks, working closely with the Board to develop risk management strategies and ensure our Board Risk Register remains up to date and within appetite.
Qualifications:
1. A strong commitment to the mission and values of Q:alliance.
2. Qualified accountant status (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent).
3. Proven experience in financial management, budgeting, and financial reporting.
4. Knowledge of charity finance and governance in the UK is preferred.
5. Previous experience in a similar role or serving on a board is an asset.
Time Commitment:
This is a voluntary position with an estimated time commitment of approximately 6 hours per month. Board meetings are typically held monthly (virtually) on the 2nd Tuesday evening of each month and take approximately 2 hours. There are occasional face-to-face meetings and team-building activities to ensure we remain an effective team, and these will be communicated in advance to facilitate attendance.
