Smart Teachers are working in partnership with one of the largest secondary schools in the country who are seeking to appoint a Head of English with a view to start from September 2025.

Job Description
They are seeking an exceptional and inspirational leader to take on the role of Head of English, starting in September 2025. This is a unique opportunity to shape the vision and direction of the English Department and make a significant impact on the academic success and personal development of our students.
Key Responsibilities
1. Provide strategic leadership for the English Department, setting high expectations for teaching and learning.
2. Lead and manage a team of dedicated teachers, fostering a culture of collaboration and professional growth.
3. Develop and implement innovative and engaging schemes of work that inspire a love of literature and language.
4. Monitor and evaluate student progress, ensuring outstanding outcomes at Key Stages 3, 4, and 5.
5. Oversee curriculum planning and assessment, aligning with national standards and school priorities.
6. Promote enrichment opportunities, including extracurricular activities, competitions, and trips, to enhance students’ experiences.
7. Work closely with senior leadership to contribute to whole-school improvement initiatives.
8. Ensure the effective use of resources within the department and maintain high standards of classroom practice.
Person Specification
1. Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with a degree in English or a related field.
2. Proven track record of successful teaching and leadership within an English Department.
3. Strong understanding of curriculum design, pedagogy, and assessment in English.
4. Excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire colleagues and students.
5. A commitment to raising aspirations and achievement for all students, regardless of their background.
6. A passion for English literature and language, with a desire to instill this enthusiasm in others.
7. Experience in leading whole-school literacy initiatives is desirable.
