An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dedicated and enthusiastic nurse to join our Acute Oncology Service.
As an acute oncology clinical nurse specialist, you will work autonomously and as part of the team to give advice, instigate investigations and implement patient care as appropriate to manage acutely unwell oncology patients presenting to the trust as result of cancer treatment, disease progression or symptoms of previously undiagnosed cancer. The post holder in conjunction with the Acute Oncology Consultant and Acute Oncology Lead Nurse will be involved in the implementation of local and network wide management and treatment protocols and pathways. The post holder will provide expert training and education to staff in A&E and medical units within the Trust in line with the requirements of national guidance.
The team is looking for applicants with band 6/7 experience in cancer, oncology, haemato-oncology or palliative care nursing and be familiar with the management of oncological emergencies. We will offer training and support to the successful applicant both in-house and externally through relevant formal education.
The post holder will be expected to work within the team as well as autonomously to prioritise and manage your caseload and time appropriately.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Review and assess patients daily who are attending ED and those who are admitted to inpatient wards.
2. Provide advice and support to clinical colleagues on the investigation, care, and management of patients within the remit of Acute Oncology leading to faster and better care of patients with complications of cancer e.g. early recognition, appropriate treatment, rapid referral to other specialist teams including palliative care.
3. Provide essential communication to improve patient experience and quality of care, reducing lengths of stay and avoiding unnecessary hospital admissions.
4. Liaise with the oncology teams and the wider multidisciplinary teams across the Trust and South East London Cancer Alliance (SELCA) to promote coordinated care.
5. Support ED to ensure that patients with suspected neutropenic sepsis have antibiotics within the door to needle time and audit this on a regular basis.
6. Contribute to training and education within specialist area to multidisciplinary groups.
7. Act as the key worker for the suspected cancer of unknown primary (CUP) patients and coordinate their investigations and information needs to ensure a smooth pathway.
8. Ensure the quality of the Acute Oncology service, CUP service and MSCC service through the application of audit and research evidence-based practice.
