Job summary Job Summary: The post holder: Will work autonomously within the Paediatric Preoperative Assessment (PPOA) service in accordance with local policies, protocols and guidelines Will assess elective surgical paediatric patients' fitness for anaesthesia and surgery. ASA 1 and 2 patients will be assessed independently whilst more complex ASA 3 and 4 patients will be referred by the PPOA Nurse to the Paediatric Anaesthetists for review and possible discussion at the fortnightly high risk MDT meeting Will initially focus on undertaking preoperative assessments, but as the service becomes more established will spend time on service development, audit and education Main duties of the job To work in accordance with the NMC Code and maintain a record of training and competencies Liaise with the POA admin team regarding which children and young people require an assessment Undertake a period of supervised practice, under the supervision of the Paediatric Anaesthetists and the Lead Nurse for Pre-Op Assessment. Once assessed as competent to independently assess children, undertake assessments on ASA 1 and 2 children and young people. Refer more complex children and young people (ASA 3 and 4) to the Paediatric Anaesthetists Review the information provided by the young person, parent/carer and if necessary phone them for further information If necessary, chase or order and follow-up any outstanding information or results Email the child/young person and parent/carer information about the anaesthetic, fasting and pain management Upload all documentation on iClip Work within Trust policies, protocols and guidelines at all times, specifically those relating to PPOA and the ordering of investigations Facilitate discussions with the child/young person and parent/carer concerning their perioperative care About us We expect all our staff to share the values that are important to the Trust, being Excellent, Kind, Responsible & Respectful, and behave in a way that reflects these.
