Vacancy: Principal Geotechnical Engineer – Offshore Energy. A great opportunity at a growing SME Offshore Consultancy. This role is based in Newcastle.
Overview
Our client is an ambitious, multidisciplinary engineering consultancy, working on some of the most exciting international Offshore Energy Sector projects. They have an excellent benefit package and competitive salary on offer alongside great training and development.
The successful candidate will manage and deliver projects both technically and financially, and from initial client contact to issue of reports, across all areas of detailed geotechnical assessment in the sector. This will include management of client relationships, management of a team of engineers, and working closely with the Engineering Director.
You’ll be working on varied projects such as geotechnical design foundations, scour assessments, rock berms, or Jack Up Assessments, through to cable engineering and secondary stabilization assessment, and you will be supervising projects internally, through management and delegation, review and quality control, and actively carrying out project work to customer requirements.

Responsibilities
1. Support the Engineering Director and lead team in the preparation of geotechnical studies, designs, and reports, predominantly associated with subsea structures.
2. Maintain time and project records and manage budgets and junior team members.
3. Conduct, review, supervise, and issue data assessments and geotechnical analyses.
4. Client liaison and lead in the preparation of geotechnical study reports.
5. Review and keep a working knowledge of up-to-date design specifications and standards.
6. Develop and manage in-house design principles and methodologies to ensure consistency across projects.
7. Assist in the technical and commercial management and planning of the business.
8. Proactively develop technical skills in accordance with the needs of the job and the agreed personal development plan.
9. Carry out business development activities and develop the subsea structures division within the company.
10. Take senior management responsibility for ensuring team and company compliance with HSEQ.
11. Actively participate and lead by example in the Company’s Quality and HSE Systems and Procedures.
12. Upkeep and ownership of your continued professional development including attendance at conferences, publishing works, presenting, and attending training courses.
13. Line management responsibility for the team.
14. You will be expected to lead projects supporting junior staff, offering internal training opportunities where appropriate, and performing staff reviews and appraisals.
15. Putting academic training into practice and progressively developing marine geotechnical expertise under the guidance of more experienced staff, and training less experienced staff, within the team and within the wider organisation.
Requirements
1. Degree in Civil Engineering or Geology, or closely related subject supported by further academic study or practical background in geotechnical engineering or engineering geology in the offshore sector.
2. Demonstrable background working in a geotechnical engineering environment in the offshore sector, expected 10 years minimum with particular focus on seabed infrastructure.
3. Good working knowledge of ground investigation, geotechnical engineering, and geological processes.
4. Working knowledge of ArcGIS, Global Mapper, and proprietary software for geotechnical analysis, such as PLAXIS, GIS, GRL WEAP.
5. Background working on offshore geotechnical design, including soil-structure integration, jack up leg penetration assessment, trenching assessments, Cable Burial Risk Assessment (CBRA).
6. Able to lead projects from conception to completion, with client liaison, project planning, team and financial management.
7. Active participation/graduate membership of a professional organisation such as the Institution of Civil Engineers, Geological Society, Society for Underwater Technology.
