Bailey Street Alternative Provision/ Chaselea Alternative Provision Stafford, England, United Kingdom
Chair of our Federated Local Advisory Committee
Commencing: As soon as is possible
Closing date: 31 January 2025
An excellent opportunity has come up at the federated Local Advisory Committee of Chaselea Alternative Provision Academy and Bailey Street Alternative Provision Academy. Both schools are part of Manor Hall Academy Trust, which has 16 academies. The schools primarily serve the districts of Cannock Chase, South Staffordshire, Stafford and Stone with pupils who have been permanently excluded from their education provision, pupils who their current provision commission a placement, or pupils who are hard to place and have moved into the local authority. Our aim is to work with our pupils to build relationships and develop their emotional resilience, with the objective of them returning to an alternative school.
We are seeking to appoint a dynamic and inspirational Chair of our Local Advisory Committee who will demonstrate great enthusiasm in leading our Local Advisory Committee. This person will also provide effective support and respectful challenge to the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team.
What is a Local Advisory Committee?
A Local Advisory Committee ("LAC") is a group of individuals, sometimes known as governors, who come from all walks of life, possessing different and varied skills, but who are committed to working closely with the leaders of our school to ensure that the school is providing the best and most effective education for our pupils. You will also be tasked with further improving the day-to-day function of the school where this is required. The LAC also reviews documents in areas such as teaching and learning, safeguarding, health and safety, and careers. An important facet of the role is asking appropriate questions and challenging in a professional way.
Please note that this is a voluntary role and you will not receive a salary for this role.
What is the role of the Chair?
1. To lead the LAC in their governance functions and to set a high expectation of how this should be performed.
2. Building and developing the LAC to ensure that all LAC Members work effectively, areas of non-performance are addressed, and that persons are properly inducted and trained.
3. Being the critical friend of the Headteacher and other Senior Leadership Team members.
4. Making decisions on behalf of the board in cases of urgency.
5. Making the casting vote in the case of a tie.
What skills should the successful candidate have?
1. To be committed to making a difference to the future of our pupils.
2. Be an effective communicator.
3. An ability to think strategically.
4. Being able to work well with others and to lead a team of LAC Members.
5. To be supportive, empathetic but also be confident to ask difficult questions.
Is it time-consuming?
A face-to-face meeting takes place twice each term and these can last between one and two hours. In addition, you will be welcomed into school to meet pupils and staff and experience the environment and learning in action. You may be contacted in-between meetings to make a decision which is urgent or to discuss an item of importance. Documents are provided in advance of the meeting so that you are prepared to ask those important questions about our school. There may also be occasions where you may be requested to sit on other panels such as those concerning exclusions or complaints.
Is it daunting and formal?
Not at all. Our LAC Members' primary commitment is to the pupils of Chaselea and Bailey Street and wanting to ensure the best future for them. LAC’s work as a mutually respectful team. Becoming a Member will give you the chance to make a real difference to young people, give something back to your local community, and join the largest volunteer force in the country.
