The Clerk of Works at LBBD is responsible for overseeing the delivery of the capital works program aimed at maintaining and adapting existing assets for future use. This role involves managing contractors on behalf of the Homes, Environment and Communities division to ensure they meet specified quality, cost, and health and safety standards throughout the project. The Clerk of Works focuses particularly on major maintenance, new builds, refurbishments, alterations, and inspections. By ensuring compliance with these standards, the Clerk of Works plays a vital role in the successful execution of construction projects within the borough.

As a Clerk of Works, you'll play a crucial role in ensuring our construction projects meet all current statutory legislation, including Health and Safety. You'll be conducting regular site inspections and keeping detailed records of the project's status from start to the end of defects. Your job will involve reviewing project specifications and drawings to ensure compliance, closely monitoring the construction works, and identifying any areas that don't meet the required standards.You'll document and track any non-compliances you find, working to resolve them effectively. Communication is key, so you'll be liaising between contractors and the design team to provide clear and accurate responses to any technical queries. Additionally, you'll be responsible for managing sensitive data, such as contractual, specification, drawing, and tender information, ensuring it is handled with confidentiality and in line with GDPR and other relevant legislation.
About you
We're looking for a Clerk of Works who has a solid qualification in a building trade and ideally is a member of the Institute of Clerk of Works and Construction Inspectorate or a similar professional body. It's important that you have Health and Safety qualifications, such as NEBOSH or IOSH. You'll need to bring extensive experience and detailed knowledge of construction contract law and associated regulations, including Planning, Building Control, and CDM Regulations.We expect you to have a strong track record in Clerk of Works roles, with proven competence in liaising between contractors and designers within construction projects, particularly under JCT and NEC forms of contract. Experience managing property or assets within the public sector is essential.Strong negotiation skills are crucial, as you'll need to influence successful outcomes related to all projects. You'll also need to be comfortable operating within a political environment and communicating effectively with officers, members, and residents. We're looking for someone who is results-driven, professional in all interactions, and understands how their role contributes to improving the borough.
