Job Role:
The Head Greenkeeper is responsible for overseeing the maintenance and management of the grounds at Upminster Golf and Bowling Club, which includes an 18 hole golf course, putting green and bowls green. They will need to ensure that the course is presented to the highest standard, providing a consistent and quality playing experience for members and guests. The Head Greenkeeper will manage the greenkeeping team, implement maintenance schedules, and be proactive in identifying areas for improvement in course health and sustainability.
Responsibilities:
Team Management:
1. Create and manage a work schedule for greenkeeping staff, ensuring the course is maintained during peak and off-peak hours.
2. Lead, supervise, and motivate a team of greenkeeping staff, ensuring they are trained and equipped to meet high standards of maintenance.
3. Provide ongoing training and development to greenkeeping team members, encouraging continuous improvement in skills and knowledge.
4. Conduct performance reviews and manage the recruitment, selection, and staffing of greenkeeping personnel.
Course Maintenance:
1. Oversee the daily maintenance of the golf course, including turf management, irrigation, drainage systems, and landscaping.
2. Ensure the course is prepared for play each day, managing the cutting, edging, and sweeping of greens, tees, fairways, rough and bunkers.
3. Develop and implement agronomic programs, including fertilization, aeration, soil testing, and pest control to ensure optimal turf health and performance.
4. Monitor weather conditions to adapt maintenance activities, ensuring course conditions remain playable and safe for golfers, implementing course closures where necessary.
5. Ensure the golf course is presented to a consistently high standard, providing an excellent golfing experience for members, guests, and tournaments.
6. Develop a conservation programme for cost effective use of water resources in relation to the irrigation of the golf course and bowling green.
Communication:
1. Maintain regular communication with the Club Secretary regarding course conditions, team performance, and any issues requiring attention.
2. Provide detailed reports on the status of course maintenance, machinery, budgets, and environmental impact.
3. Report on any significant weather events or other factors that may affect course playability or maintenance needs.
Compliance and Health & Safety:
1. Ensure that all health and safety regulations are adhered to, including the safe use of machinery and handling of chemicals and fertilizers.
2. Ensure we are compliant and up to date with all health and safety, relating to environmental regulations.
3. Develop and implement safety procedures for the greenkeeping team, including risk assessments, training, and emergency protocols.
4. Maintain up-to-date records for all machinery and equipment, ensuring regular servicing and compliance with safety standards.
Budget and Resourcing:
1. Assist in the preparation and management of the greenkeeping department’s budget, ensuring cost-effective use of resources and maintaining high standards of work.
2. Source, order, and manage supplies of seeds, fertilizers, chemicals, and other materials, ensuring stock levels are sufficient for seasonal demands.
3. Maintain an inventory of machinery and tools, ensuring their proper upkeep, servicing, and safe operation.
Skills & Qualifications:
1. Proven experience in greenkeeping, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or management role.
2. Strong knowledge of turf management, irrigation systems, machinery operation, and course maintenance techniques.
3. Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and develop a team.
4. Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
5. Knowledge of health and safety regulations, as well as environmental sustainability practices.
6. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to engage with staff, members, and management.
7. Experience in managing or working on golf course projects (e.g., redesigns, renovations, or course expansions).
8. First Aid certification.
9. NVQ level 2 & 3 in greenkeeping & sports turf management.
