Job overview
We are looking to recruit a Locum General Consultant ENT Surgeon with a special interest in Otology to join our team for a fixed term period of 6 months with the possibility of a further 6 months. This post is a new post, with a plan to recruit to substantively. The aim of this 10PA post is to help with the elective recovery and to expand the SWBH ENT service and consultant team.
It is an exciting time at the Trust with our brand new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) having opened in October 2024, and we are looking for enthusiastic, innovative and progressive clinicians to join us as we expand and develop the service. The Trust has also recently become part of the Black Country and West Birmingham Integrated Care System and there will be opportunities to be involved in the design of regional services.
Applications are welcomed from candidates with FRCS (or equivalent) who are on the Full General Medical Council’s Specialist Register. Applicants within 6 months of attaining their CCT at the time of interview or applicants who have submitted for entry to the specialist register via portfolio pathway with equivalent experience for completion of training will be considered.

Main duties of the job
The successful applicants will join our growing team of consultant ENT surgeons delivering elective and emergency care, including contributing to a 1 in 8 emergency non-resident on-call rota. The successful candidates will be expected to work across all trust sites. Elective activity day case and outpatient clinic is delivered at the Birmingham Treatment Center (BTC) with further elective outpatients, inpatient operating and on-call activity at Midland Metropolitan Hospital (MMUH).
The Department is further supported by 2 Clinical Nurse specialist posts and a team of Resident doctors; 7 Specialty middle grades, 4 core training level doctors (1CT, 2GPVTS, 1LED) and two Foundation year doctors. To support our team, an interest in medical education is welcome and the successful candidates will be encouraged to take on an additional role as an educator.
Active engagement in quality improvement activity and research is expected and, as well as an active postgraduate teaching program, the department is also committed to training the undergraduates from the medical schools of University of Birmingham and Aston University, Birmingham.
Person specification
Qualifications
* FRCS (ORL-HNS) or Equivalent
* Entry on the GMC Specialist register for Otolaryngology (or within 6 months of CCT or CESR at the time of interview)
* Higher Degree
Clinical Skills and Experience
* Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in ENT with a wide experience in Otology
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the management of acute ENT emergencies and the care of elective ENT patients
* Special interest that complements the existing consultants
* Fellowship in Otology
Professional and Multi-disciplinary team working
* Ability to work well with colleagues and within a team
Management and Administrative Experience:
* Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
* Ability to plan strategically and to exercise sound judgements when faced with conflicting pressures.
* Ability to motivate and develop the multi-disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives.
Clinical Effectiveness
* Experience of conducting clinical audit
* Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision-making
Teaching and Training experience
* Ability to teach clinical skills to medical and nursing staff and other disciplines
* The ability to appraise junior doctors and other staff
* Formal training in teaching
Research, Innovation and Service Improvement Experience
* Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
* An awareness of current specialty developments, initiatives and issues.
* Knowledge and experience of the application of information technology to ENT
* Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last five years.
* Evidence of having undertaken original research

* Ability to undertake clinical commitments at any of the Trust’s sites.
