Sunflower House is an inpatient mental health facility, designed to help children and young people aged 5 to 13 who are going through a difficult time or struggling because of their way of thinking, their feelings, or with some difficult behaviour.
Most of the children and young people start by having short, overnight visits with us, so we can get to know and understand each other before a longer stay.
Main duties of the job
As a member of the multidisciplinary team, and specifically the core team, working within agreed supervision and support structures in line with PDP, to undertake the following:
* To work as the key nurse, ensuring the delivery of a high standard of family centred assessment and treatment plans as agreed with the multidisciplinary team on a day-to-day basis through participation in and the provision of, aspects of a wide range of therapeutic approaches and activities within the inpatient and community setting.
* To support the day-to-day organisational planning and operational management of aspects of the Unit, including managing ad hoc shifts or defined areas of a shift as requested by the senior nurse.
* To support the day-to-day development and delivery of training and development packages to new/junior nurses, support worker staff and student nurses within the Unit.

CLINICAL/PATIENT/CLIENT CARE:
* Using a range of clinical skills, to assist and at times autonomously lead on assessment and treatment care needs, within a risk assessment framework for children and their families admitted to the Unit.
* To assist in the planning, implementation and evaluation of family centred nursing care and management plans as agreed with the core team.
* To support the delivery of a range of daily individual and group structures to promote the therapeutic milieu of the Unit.
* To observe, communicate and at times, co-work with senior multidisciplinary team members, in the provision of a range of therapeutic approaches on an individual, group or family basis.
* To provide high quality clear written and verbal accounts of the child's stay in relation to the defined care and management plans.
MANAGEMENT & LEADERSHIP:
* Contribute to the promotion of a working culture that improves quality and efficiency within the department.
* To support the senior management team with the identification of more efficient ways of working within area of responsibility.
* To take charge of defined shifts, supporting the team by organising and managing tasks related to the daily structure and functioning of the service.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
* Communicate professionally and effectively with patients/parents/carers, the general public and all internal and external agencies both verbally and non-verbally in a timely manner.
* Ensure diplomacy, empathy and confidentiality when dealing with distressed patients/parents/carers.
ANALYSIS AND JUDGEMENT SKILLS:
* To critically analyse and make informed judgements on clinical presentation and related care needs of the patient group on a day to day basis.
* To ensure comprehensive clinical risk assessment and management needs of the patient group on a day to day basis.
PLANNING AND ORGANISATIONAL SKILLS:
* To plan and organise the day to day activity of the shift in the role of Nurse In Charge (NIC) and ensure key information is effectively communicated to ensure appropriate management of future shifts.
* To support the delivery of a high quality patient care by working closely with the unit team to meet national and locally agreed targets for in-patient CAMHS.
