We are excited to invite applications for the position of Specialty Doctor in Haematology at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Applicants must have completed a minimum of four years of full-time postgraduate training, including at least two years in clinical haematology. Ideally, candidates should possess FRCPath or an equivalent qualification. Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) is mandatory at the time of application.
The successful appointee will join a dedicated team comprising five consultants, 3.5 specialty doctors, and rotating junior staff who deliver a comprehensive haematology service. The multidisciplinary team includes highly skilled specialist nurses in anticoagulation, chemotherapy, transfusion, haemoglobinopathy, and paediatric haematology.
The Trust is proud to operate a Level 2a Haemato-Oncology Unit, opened in July 2017, featuring 10 inpatient beds and 4 recliner chairs for outpatient and inpatient care. These services are supported by a state-of-the-art Macmillan chemotherapy suite and a Medical Day Ward.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will:
* Actively participate in delivering and developing haematology services.
* Share responsibilities equitably with colleagues and contribute to the department's governance and operational framework.
* Provide haematology care for inpatients, day-case patients, and inpatient referrals without any regular on-call out-of-hours duties.
* Cover for colleagues during absences and ensure the continued care of patients under their charge.
* Attend and contribute to Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings as required.
* Develop subspecialist interests in alignment with departmental objectives to expand specialist services.
* Collaborate with managers, general practitioners, and clinical colleagues to ensure the efficient running of services.
* Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training junior doctors, and conducting audit projects. Opportunities for research are also available.
* Supervise junior medical staff, dedicating time to their training and development regularly.
Registration
* Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
* Minimum of four years of postgraduate training, including successful completion of Foundation Years 1 and 2.
* At least two years of core or specialty training in Haematology.
Clinical Skills
* Acute Care Safe: Up-to-date ALS certification with experience in hospital-at-night team working and out-of-hours care relevant to the role.
* Specialty Knowledge: Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge to practice.
* Clinical Judgment: Experience in decision-making, risk management, prioritising clinical needs, and seeking appropriate help.
* Practical Skills: Aptitude for the practical skills required in Haematology.
