Primary Teaching Assistant
Sense Education is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Primary Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEND provision in Kendal. This rewarding role involves supporting primary-aged students with special educational needs in a purpose-built, nurturing environment. You will assist in the delivery of learning activities, support with behaviour management, and help students develop essential communication and life skills. Your role will be key in helping them achieve their full potential, both academically and socially.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Provide one-on-one and group support to students with a range of special educational needs.
2. Assist in implementing individual learning plans and behaviour strategies.
3. Support students in developing communication skills using tools like PECS and Makaton (training available).
4. Encourage the development of social and life skills, fostering independence.
5. Assist with personal care duties as needed.
6. Monitor and record student progress, providing feedback to teachers and the multidisciplinary team.
Key Requirements:
1. Experience working with children with additional needs, ideally in a school or care setting.
2. A compassionate and patient approach, with strong behaviour management skills.
3. Ability to work collaboratively with teachers and other professionals.
4. A proactive and flexible attitude to meet the diverse needs of students.
5. Familiarity with PECS, Makaton, or other communication methods – training can be provided.
6. A commitment to supporting students’ emotional and academic growth.

Hours: 8.30-3.30, Monday to Friday (part-time applications also considered)

Safeguarding children is an integral part of what we do and we have a stringent safer recruitment process. We undertake checks on all the candidates we work with. As such we require a current Enhanced DBS Disclosure for everyone working in Schools. If you do not have a subscription to the DBS Update Service, you may be required to complete a new DBS application as part of the registration process. If you take a temporary role with Sense Education you will be paid on a weekly basis.
