An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 4, Alcohol Care Team Practitioner to join the Alcohol Care Team (ACT) at STSFT. ACTs are teams of alcohol specialist clinicians, based in acute hospitals which provide specialist support, predominantly to alcohol-dependent patients.
The Alcohol Practitioner will be an integral member of the Alcohol Care Team, which provides care and treatment for patients with alcohol misuse issues in a hospital environment. Working closely with the Alcohol Care Team, the Alcohol Practitioner will assess the needs of the individual patient and deliver appropriate psychosocial interventions.
Main duties of the job
1. Responsible for managing a caseload of individual patients who are not engaging in the community but continue to come to hospital to reduce alcohol health harms through a wide range of support.
2. Flexible to meet the needs of the team and will demonstrate knowledge, expertise and passion in working within the speciality of alcohol misuse.
3. To develop therapeutic relationships with clients.
4. To have knowledge of the impact excessive alcohol consumption has on physical health, mental health and social issues and to use this knowledge to fully assess patients.
5. To provide brief interventions, psychosocial interventions and motivational interviewing as appropriate.
6. To screen patients to identify those at risk from alcohol related health and social problems and those whose health is being damaged by alcohol.
7. Improve data collection and opportunities for analysis. The post will require flexibility, working across Sunderland Royal and South Tyneside Hospital, you will also contribute to covering a 7 day service.
8. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills, team working skills and will be dedicated to improving the patients' experience.
9. You will need to demonstrate continuing professional development and a strong commitment to develop others and work closely within a multi-disciplinary team.
Person Specification
Skills & Knowledge
* Knowledge and experience in delivering of psychological interventions including brief interventions.
* Knowledge of the impact alcohol misuse can have on physical health, mental health and social issues.
* Ability to build constructive relationships with warmth, using good communication skills.
* Ability to be flexible and to manage own workload effectively.
* Ability to work under pressure.
* Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.
* Ability to work in partnership with other agencies.
* Competent in the use of IT software such as Microsoft Office.
* Ability to deliver training and presentations as required to staff and service users.
* Knowledge of national health and social care policy.
* Ability to recognize when to escalate concerns to senior staff.
Physical Skills
* Ability to assist patients to move as per Trust Moving and Handling Policy.
* Flexible to meet the needs of the service covering 7 days a week.
Qualifications
* Maths and English (GCSE 9-4) or Maths and English Functional Skills Level 2.
* Level 3 NVQ in Health and Social Care or equivalent.
Experience
* Proven prior experience in working with clients with alcohol misuse issues.
* Experience of working within an acute hospital.
* Experience in providing training in brief interventions.
