The Mitochondrial Highly Specialised Service is one of only three centres in the UK providing a comprehensive service for adults and children with Mitochondrial Disease. A multi-disciplinary team of specialist doctors, nurses and therapists provide diagnostic and clinical management via face to face and telehealth clinics to patients nationally. The legal framework for Mitochondrial Donation (MD), a specialist IVF technique to minimise transmission of mitochondrial DNA was established with the parliamentary legislation ratified in 2016. Our mitochondrial reproductive advice care pathway offers assessment of fitness for pregnancy, psychological support and advice regarding reproductive options for IVF-based techniques, including access to the first UK mitochondrial donation programme. Our multidisciplinary team is active in research to better understand the disease, develop new therapeutic strategies and improve patient care. Work with clinical service lead and NHS England to maintain clinical expertise and international reputation. Autonomously provide direct patient care and consultation with a defined case load in the mitochondrial MDT clinic. Take an active role in the planning of service provision, developing care pathways, clinical governance, guidelines and patient/public engagement activities. Extended clinical skills for provision of nurse-led needle muscle biopsy service. Work closely with the multidisciplinary team and Newcastle fertility service at the centre for life to offer mitochondrial patients reproductive choice to minimise transmission of mitochondrial DNA, including advice and support to obstetric teams nationally, regarding mitochondrial disease and complications of pregnancy. Co-ordinate a research project to assess the neurodevelopmental outcome of children born following Mitochondrial Donation.
