To be the Midwifery lead in the care of women who have experienced poor pregnancy outcomes including stillbirth, termination for abnormality, and mid-trimester losses.
Liaising with the multidisciplinary team and joint working with the Consultant Midwife and Obstetricians. To manage a small team and provide continuity of care and support for women and their families. To facilitate training and support for staff involved in the care of these women.
Manage, plan, and coordinate care for all bereaved clients liaising with the multidisciplinary team and other statutory/voluntary agencies.
Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate specialist care based on evidence-based practice. Facilitate the development of all staff including junior medical staff and support workers providing training within the specialist field.
Formulate and implement policies and procedures for the care of bereaved women within the Maternity Unit. Liaise with Managers when complaints arise in connection with fetal loss.
Deal personally with women and their families in order to aid resolution of complaints.
Audit practice around bereavement support within the Maternity Unit.
Assessment of women for their ongoing emotional support and make the appropriate referrals. Ensure the necessary paperwork is completed following delivery, i.e., for funeral arrangements, MBBRACE, and Perinatal Mortality Review Tool.
Co-ordinate the retrieval of pathological investigations, including post-mortem reports, and ensure the results are available for the follow-up appointments.
Lead in setting, monitoring, and reviewing standards and procedures for bereavement support that are within the clinical governance framework.
Provide specialist advice and training supporting/supervising students and junior medical staff about caring for bereaved women.
Work within the Human Tissue Authority Standards and take tissue samples where required after training.
