Job overview:
This position would suit someone who is looking to progress from a Supervisory role into Management. This is an exciting opportunity for the right person to use and develop their current skillset within the waste management and recycling sector. Previous experience of working within Waste Management and Recycling would be preferred.
The role would suit an individual who enjoys working outdoors, can lead by example, who is enthusiastic with a strong commitment to continuous improvement and the ability to embrace change. This is not solely an office-based position, as you will be required to undertake onsite practical work.
Job Title: Operations Manager
Salary: £40,000 + dependent on experience
Hours: 7.00am-5.00pm (you will on occasion be required to work outside these hours due to your position).
Responsibilities for the job role:
* Overall responsibility for all depot operations and administration in the Cardiff Depot, including the Waste Transfer Station, Site Office and Weighbridge.
* Assisting with all environmental issues within the above departments and liaising with Natural Resources Wales (NRW), in support of the Compliance Manager, Quality Manager and Divisional Operations Manager.
* Assisting with Health & Safety issues within the Transfer Station and Site Office and liaising with the HSE, in support of the Companies Group Health & Safety Manager. Ensuring that all operations are carried out safely, efficiently, economically and timely in accordance with Company Policies and Procedures.
* Ensuring that all operations on site are conducted safely and that all staff are fully inducted and have received adequate training for their roles. Producing Risk Assessments and Method Statements for all tasks undertaken. Identifying areas where training is required and maintaining a record of training received. Reviewing training requirements and reporting findings as required or at least on an annual basis, in support of the H&S Training Coordinator.
* Ensuring compliance within the operational area with all Company procedures, statutory legislation and industry good practice. Maintaining a professional relationship with local business unit residents and managing fugitive emissions within the operational area.
* Overseeing the transportation of waste to ensure that loading occurs timely and efficiently without contaminating air, land or water sources.
* Developing and maintaining Quality Assurance specifications, performance of recycling and performance of subordinates. Maximising recycling and recovery rates within the Waste Transfer area in line with company objectives and ensuring productivity is consistently at its highest level to meet all financial budgets.
* Leading the development, promotion, quality and implementation of increased recovery and recycling programs, supported by the senior management team.
* Developing an understanding of the operational issues within the Depot and progressively developing a plan to implement changes that improve management, cost control and profitability of the site.
* Reviewing and reporting on monthly cost statements produced for the Depot by the Finance Division along with variance reporting and statistical analysis, ensuring that necessary internal Depot controls for monitoring are in place.
* Producing and maintaining accurate and timely Department budgets, cost reviews and monthly commentary reports, supported by the Divisional Operations Manager.
* Responsible for all maintenance requirements, maintenance administration and plant inspections within the Depot, including traffic management and site security.
* Organising shift cover when required, ensuring shift complement is maintained and conducting return to work discussions with team members returning from absences. Liaising with HR regarding employee welfare or disciplinary meetings to maintain staff consistency.
* Adopting a flexible attitude towards work where on occasion the post holder may be requested to assist operations outside normal working hours or undertake onsite practical work, including providing cover for the weighbridge operator if required.
Experience and qualifications:
* To hold a Certificate of Technical Competence (COTC) or to be working towards becoming the Technical Competent Manager (TCM). WAMITAB Level 4 Transfer/Treatment Non-Hazardous.
* To maintain an up-to-date operational knowledge of waste recycling best practices.
* IOSH Managing Safely qualification preferred but not essential.
* Training will be provided for the right candidate subject to successfully completing the relevant probationary period.
