Main duties of the job
Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is looking for motivated, highly enthusiastic and dynamic Senior or Intermediate Clinical Coder to join our clinical coding team. You will be expected to maintain your clinical coding skills and knowledge. You will have the opportunity to gain experience in other coding roles such as audit, training, and mentoring. The successful candidate must have willingness to learn and embrace new experiences.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
For the Senior Clinical Coder position (Band 5 + 30% R&R Premium), the successful candidate must have passed the NCCQ examination. An extensive understanding of International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) and OPCS-4 as well as thorough understanding of national clinical coding standards and conventions is required.
A band 4 intermediate clinical coder position would be considered for any candidates wanting to take the NCCQ examination or awaiting results and with a minimum 2 years recent experience working as a clinical coder within the NHS. Any candidates not wishing to take the NCCQ examination must have a minimum 3 years recent experience within an acute NHS trust clinical coding department.
Candidates must have completed the NHS Digital approved standards/foundation course. Other essential skills include excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with junior clinical coders, auditors, and clinicians.

Qualifications
* NCCQ (ACC Status) for Band 5 position
* Standards/Foundation Course for Band 4 position
* Good educational background or equivalent gained through training qualification and experience in related field.
Experience
* Proven and in-depth knowledge, experience and understanding of ICD 10 and OPCS 4 coding classifications and standards in the NHS UK environment.
* Experience of using both paper records and electronic records to extract clinical information for the purpose of clinical coding.
* Attendance at clinical coding refresher course every 2-3 years.
Knowledge
* Sound knowledge of the importance of clinical coding and its uses and an understanding of data quality issues.
Skills
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to liaise with a wide range of hospital personnel: Consultants, Clinicians, Secretaries, Ward Clerks and others.
* Answering telephone queries within the department in a polite and professional manner, taking messages where appropriate.
