We aim to have a true 7 day service and, to realise that aim, we are increasing our consultant physician workforce by 50% over the next 2 years. There will also be a marked increase in junior medical staff to support this development. We are looking for dynamic and motivated Acute and General Physicians to join our friendly team at the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT), to develop and embed high quality medical care for patients in a number of different clinical settings.
The post-holder will have a well-developed acute and general medical knowledge, allowing the ability and confidence to function decisively and autonomously. Candidates must be hard-working, dependable and professional in keeping with GMC good medical practice.
Main duties of the job
The basic whole-time contract is for 10 programmed activities (PAs) 8.5 DCC (1 PA for on call and 1.5 PAs admin time and educational supervision time included within this) + additional 1.5 SPA.
The job plan is indicative only and is negotiable to take the candidates aspirations/special interest/part time working into account. There will be a discussion with successful candidates regarding the final job plan/on-call arrangements, prior to the interview and appointment to ensure the job plan reflects both the individuals and organisation goals.
Additional programmed PAs may be available for additional activities and specialist interests if desired including a combination of acute work and back of house medicine specialty work. Additional SPA time may be available depending on individual and service requirements.

The post-holder will be expected to undertake clinical work in conjunction with their clinical colleagues and other professional staff in order to maintain and develop eldery care and acute frailty services.
The post-holder will be based with the Acute Medical Units / SDEC's at Darlington Memorial Hospital or University Hospital North Durham.
The post holder will be expected:
1. To undertake clinical work in conjunction with colleagues and other professional staff in order to maintain and develop acute medical services and to develop specialist skills in accordance with the needs of the department.
2. Responsibility in conjunction with colleagues for planning future developments of the service.
3. Will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and will be expected to provide a comprehensive clinical service alongside Consultant colleagues.
4. Expectation to cover colleagues in their absence and ensure continuous patient care.
5. For management purposes and use of resources, accountable to the Clinical Director of the Medical Directorate and will ensure the effective and efficient use of resources allocated.
6. Responsible for the professional and educational supervision of junior medical staff.
7. Expected to participate in the postgraduate teaching of medical staff and undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades of staff.
8. Research activities, which are considered to be an inherent part of normal clinical duties, will be encouraged and limited research funding may be available following successful applications to the local research and development committee.
9. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) responsibility for ensuring that you meet the national requirements for CPD, both internal and external. Attend regularly, and contribute to, the weekly half-day educational activities held by the Care Group. The Trust supports requirements for continuing professional development as laid down by the Royal Colleges and is committed to providing support for these activities.
10. Actively participate in clinical audit.
11. Participate in clinical governance arrangements in line with national and local guidelines and in respect of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the Trust in accordance with current best practice.
12. Involved in the care of a patient who subsequently initiates a claim against the Trust and expectation to provide, free of charge, an opinion and statement of facts on the case.
13. On call commitments the post includes a GIM on call commitment.

Special Skills & Knowledge
Essential
* Previous management experience or formal management and leadership training
* Previous active involvement in audit and QiP work
* Evidence of active teaching of undergraduates, junior doctors, nurses or allied health professionals
* Evidence of previous research experience or clinical effectiveness work
* Good clinical skills
* To be able to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems within the service
* Understands factors affecting patient safety
* Experience and understanding of audit and conducting clinical audit
* Demonstrates awareness of developing situations in clinical environment
* Demonstrates ability to solve problems & make timely decisions, even when under pressure
* Able to use IT to enhance patient care

* Certificate of Medical Education or other educational qualification
* Willingness to become involved in departmental research projects and to lead some research or academic development
Qualifications
Essential
* Full registration with the GMC (and licence to Practice).
* MBBS or equivalent
* MRCP
* CCT in or within 6 months of expected CCT at time of appointment, or on the specialist register through equivalent training and experience.
