Full Time 37 hours per week
The Devon Sensory team are looking for a Sensory (hearing and vision) Rehabilitation Officer to join our county wide team in the Southern area of Devon (office base in Newton Abbot). The team supports people with significant hearing and sight loss and provides information, advice, signposting, and practical solutions to help manage the impact of these conditions.
Sensory Rehabilitation Officers focus on preventative work and promote independence through offering strategies and solutions for the difficulties that hearing and sight loss can cause.
You will carry out assessments of people's needs and goals - meeting face to face or over the telephone. Very good communication skills are required as you will be working with people who can find communication difficult. Solutions for the problems you identify may include demonstration of specialist equipment, provision of information and advice, or coaching in the use of rehabilitation strategies.
You will be working as part of integrated adult social care, using a holistic, strengths-based approach under the ethos of the 2014 Care Act, working with other professionals in health/social care and the voluntary sector. Practical problem solving and dealing with sensitive issues tactfully, plus the ability to travel large distances to remote areas in Devon is essential.
You will be working independently, but have support from the Team Manager and your colleagues who specialise in working with Deaf people/Visual Impairment, with regular specialist supervision. You will need to be able to use your own initiative and be confident in making decisions.
A level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care (or equivalent) is desirable for this role (or willingness to work towards) and experience of working in a social care environment or third sector working with people would be beneficial.
Some knowledge of hearing/sight impairment would also be beneficial but is not essential as full training will be provided.
