Closing Date: 06 March 2025 The Role We have an exciting opportunity to join one of the leading Engineering Schools in the UK where you will support the delivery of our very popular taught Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes, in the field of Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technology. We are particularly looking for candidates who could lead on the development of and/or contribution towards the delivery of programmes, modules and a range of high-quality teaching and learning resources within: • Design, Manufacture and Materials (DMM)- x 1 post • Bioengineering (BE)- x 1 post • Marine Technology (MT)- x 1 post These world leading groups aim to deliver impactful teaching across the whole spectrum of Mechanical and Marine Technology, from underpinning theories through to applications. You will work as part of a team to ensure the development and success of teaching and scholarship within the associated Group. This role is fixed term for a period of 12 months. Academic Job Description Key Accountabilities • Contribute to the planning and development of new programmes and modules, with a strong focus on DMM, BE or MT • Deliver teaching and learning experiences using high-quality materials, resources, and activities at UG and MSc levels • The integration, management and supervision of student learning experiences such as individual student projects • The integration of scholarship and/or professional activities within teaching and supporting learning, as appropriate • Provide personal tutoring and mentoring for students, giving first line support and referring students as appropriate to services providing further help • Manage the setting, marking and assessing of coursework and examinations, providing timely and effective feedback to students • Contribute to the wider work of the School/Faculty and University through input to project teams, working groups, and committees • Evaluate own practice and undertake continuing professional development • Contribute to School and University open day, outreach and recruitment activities The Person Knowledge, Skills and Experience • Demonstrable knowledge/expertise in Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering and/or Marine Technology • Deep knowledge of the latest pedagogical research in teaching and assessment, with experience of using a wide range of teaching technology in the delivery of modules to often large class sizes (>100) • Experience of developing and delivering teaching resources (lecture notes, videos, tutorials and practicals) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering • Experiencing of supervising Undergraduate and Postgraduate taught projects in any of the above areas • Ability to explain complex concepts and theories in a clear manner with a range of abilities both at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels • Demonstrable knowledge of teaching and learning methods, and techniques, including online approaches • Evidence of experience in the development of a range of high-quality teaching and learning activities and resources • Highly developed planning and organisational skills • Experience of university-level teaching • Evidence of providing mentoring or leadership to teaching teams • Evidence of impactful course development at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels Attributes and Behaviour • Original thinking and analysis of complex information that brings new pedagogical insights to the subject and School • Willingness to participate in projects, including those with collaborators outside the school and to assist with the administration of the School • Professionalism: care and diligence, investing in self-development, taking responsibility, acting with integrity, championing the organisation • Independence: challenging the status quo, seeking clarification, questioning assumptions, encouraging diverse views • Performance focus: focus on goals and priorities, exhibiting and entrepreneurial spirits, setting high standards • Ethical outlook: expressing the university’s values, displaying high standards of conduct, managing institutional and individual priorities, identifying and managing conflicts of interest, treating others fairly and showing commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion • Awareness of self and others: recognising and limiting bias, displaying empathy and cultural sensitivity • Excellent team working and networking skills Qualifications • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant subject area • A PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering or Marine Technology or a closely related area Newcastle University is a global University where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
