Paediatric Surgical Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse

An exciting opportunity has arisen within our 16-bedded surgical paediatric ward. We are a ward managing surgical elective patients from a wide number of surgical specialities including: orthopaedics, ophthalmic, ENT, cleft lip and palate, oncology and general surgery. We are part of a surgical floor that works closely together with Children's Surgical Day Case and D35 managing emergency surgery.

We as a children's hospital achieved ANCC Pathway To Excellence accreditation and are currently the only Children's Hospital in Europe to have achieved this. This has opened up new opportunities which we are currently building on in Nottingham Children's Hospital.
Main duties of the job
Ensure high quality, evidence-based care is offered to patients and, in collaboration with the Ward Manager, identify the common issues which affect the quality of care, devising clear action plans to address any shortcomings.
In collaboration with the Ward Manager, ensure that the patient has a positive experience by evaluating patient process and the pathway of care.
You will be required to support the Ward Manager in ensuring clinical audits take place in line with the Trust's requirements to improve practice.
You will also be a main point of contact for patients, visitors, relatives and staff acting as a resource for problems, needs and able to clearly present the patient's view to others.
On completion of successful training, you will be required to take charge of the nurse bleep for the Children's Hospital on occasions.

In addition, this role provides leadership and management support to the Ward Sister and team to ensure safe, effective running of the ward on a daily basis.

Job responsibilities
1. Encourage ward/department staff to be involved in the management of resources, by effective use of clinical and non-clinical supplies and understanding of financial issues.
2. Contribute to the work of time limited committees and project groups.
3. Ensure that, where applicable, information is maintained and kept in an appropriate place and that accurate records are maintained and stored in accordance with Trust and national policy.
4. Be a major instrument of change within the clinical area in response to clinical incidents and/or demands.
5. Participate in acting-up rota as required, holding the directorate/floor bleep as necessary.
6. Support the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in ensuring the development and ongoing management of work rosters that provide appropriate safe staff cover.
7. Improve and maintain standards of essential (basic) nursing care by working with the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse and using tools such as clinical benchmarking.
8. Work with the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse to identify hazards relating to clinical and non-clinical risks and undertake identified risk assessments.
9. Ensure that junior staff also see this as important by maintaining a culture which will support the delivery of both clinical and non-clinical governance within the ward or department.
10. Support of the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in ensuring that best practice undertaken is shared with colleagues in the directorate, division and the Trust.
11. Helping staff to use clinical information within the ward or department to help improve the quality of patient care.
12. Being able to demonstrate clear lines of communication within a defined clinical area which result in clear responsibilities being identified within the multi professional team.
13. Creating a culture where staff have appropriate authority over issues that contribute to the provision of essential care and enable them to secure and achieve the highest quality standards.
14. Assisting in the establishment, motivation and development of the clinical team with a clear focus and direction.
15. Take an active role in self-development and identifying one's own needs, taking appropriate steps to meeting those needs.
Person Specification
Education
* NMC - Child
* Formal leadership and management training
* Research training/experience
Communication and relationship skills
* Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills
* Demonstrate basic IT skills
* Produce timely, accurate written/electronic records and documents
* Can minimise interpersonal conflict and barriers to communication
* Demonstrate evidence of providing informal teaching sessions
Experience
* Experience at band 5 for a minimum of 3 years
* Evidence of ability to mentor
* Ability to manage the clinical area or ward efficiently and effectively
* Ability to convey sensitive information in an empathetic manner to patients, relative/carers and staff
* Recent or current experience within the specialty
* Demonstrate an involvement in link nurse, or project work
* Audit or research within the clinical area
* Providing staff with feedback on their individual performance and use of the knowledge and skills framework
