Purpose of Role
Applications are invited for a full-time Laboratory Technician to work on industry-funded projects. The initial appointment will be for 2 years with a high probability that the appointment will be extended, subject to successful completion of the planned research. This is an exciting opportunity for an exceptionally motivated and hard-working person interested in laboratory research in the field of multiphase fluid flow in subsurface reservoirs. This role will be based in the Centre for EOR and CO2 Solutions at the Institute of Geoenergy Engineering within the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society at Heriot-Watt University’s campus in Edinburgh. The Centre is internationally recognised as a centre of excellence for its pioneering work on understanding the complex mechanisms involved in multiphase flow in porous media applicable to subsurface storage of CO2 natural gas and hydrogen, oil and gas recovery, and many other applications related to the subsurface reservoirs. The centre works closely with several national and international energy companies.
The successful candidate is expected to support the delivery of several laboratory-based industry projects focused on testing and developing technologies related to injection of CO2, water with different salinities, natural gas, hydrogen, and chemical in subsurface reservoirs. In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to supporting, supervising and mentoring the Centre’s PhD students.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to undertake the following:
* Provide technical support to staff and PhD students in the lab,
* Carry out a range of laboratory testing for both routine and R&D work,
* Assist with day-to-day running and workload of the lab,
* Follow health and safety procedures,
* Handle and analyze experimental data, plot results, and report and present laboratory work.
* Set up and maintain experimental apparatus and test components under operational conditions,
* Understand and acknowledge risks associated with the work activity and operate in a safe and compliant manner at all times applying control measures identified through risk assessment,
* Manual handling of laboratory equipment, their components and also material related to running flow-related experiments such as rocks, fluids, pressure vessels.
Essential & Desirable Criteria
Essential
1. A degree in chemical/petroleum engineering, chemistry, physics, or a related discipline.
2. Ability to adapt to a variety of different laboratory procedures,
3. Ability to follow procedures and Health & Safety Regulations,
4. Multi-tasking ability.
Desirable
1. Experience working in a relevant role.
2. Experience in the use of scientific equipment.
3. Experience in conducting experiments involving fluids or rocks, preferably under pressure and temperature.
How to Apply
Applications can be submitted up to midnight (UK time) on Sunday 2nd February 2025.
Please submit your CV and covering letter via the Heriot-Watt online recruitment.
We welcome and will consider flexible working patterns e.g., part-time working and job share options.
