Job Description:
This position reports to the Team Manager. The Chief Mechanic is responsible for managing the team of mechanics to build and run both cars trackside and in the factory. In collaboration with the Race Engineering and Race Team Support groups, the Chief Mechanic directs the mechanics throughout the build process and throughout the race weekend, coordinating the assembly methodically while adhering to strict deadlines, quality standards, and FIA technical regulations and associated legal requirements.
What you will be doing:
Team Leadership & Development: Manage and coach department personnel, ensuring high performance through guidance, mentorship, and structured training. Conduct performance reviews and create individual development plans to foster staff growth.
Operational Efficiency: Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) and manage departmental budgets to ensure effective and functional operations. Plan and coordinate car build schedules and race team workflow for all events, ensuring smooth delivery to the race team.
Pit Stop & Equipment Management :Collaborate with the race team to manage pit stop sessions, ensuring continuous improvement in staff performance and equipment readiness. Ensure cars and sub-assemblies meet build specifications, aero quality standards, and setup parameters.
Engineering Coordination & Performance Readiness : Work with Race Engineering to pre-emptively prepare alternative performance components and assemblies for upcoming race events. Anticipate changes and ensure car crews can implement adjustments accurately and on time.
Compliance & Scrutineering: Maintain a strong working relationship with FIA Technical Delegates to ensure the team is ready for pre-event scrutineering and mandatory inspections. Ensure compliance with legal checks and Parc Ferme regulations during race events.
Trackside Support & Logistics: Lead the Race Team Support and Trackside Spares teams, ensuring the logistics of car and spare part movements between the factory and track are well managed. Ensure car and garage presentation aligns with corporate branding guidelines and expectations.
Equipment & Maintenance Oversight: Oversee the commissioning and maintenance of complex machinery and car running equipment, ensuring high standards are met. Coordinate with suppliers to negotiate contracts and source parts to improve supply chain efficiency.
Issue Documentation & Resolution : Document any mechanical or operational issues during race weekends, ensuring that fixes and improvements are reported to the relevant departments.
Incident Management: Manage compliance-related incidents, investigate breaches, and implement corrective actions.
Reporting: Prepare and present compliance reports to senior management and regulatory bodies, documenting compliance activities and outcomes.
Budget & Financial Management: Assist in maintaining the departmental budget, coordinating with colleagues on proposed and actual costs.
Travel & Operational Planning : Participate in Travel and Team Manager meetings, providing input on logistical and operational planning for race events.
Health & Safety Compliance: Enforce health & safety guidelines in all venues, ensuring the team follows safety protocols at all times.
Additional Duties : Undertake any other responsibilities or tasks delegated by the Race Team Manager .
Requirements
Education & Work Experience
· HNC level certification in Engineering or an equivalent qualification.
· A minimum of 4 years’ trackside involvement in Formula 1 motorsport.
· Previous experience as a Chief Mechanic or No.1 Mechanic in the Formula 1 World Championship is preferred.
· Strong problem-solving skills, logical thinking, and the ability to conduct research and reporting effectively.

· Strong planning, strategic, and organizational abilities.
· Ability to see the bigger picture while managing intricate details in a high-pressure, time-sensitive environment.

· Extensive mechanical knowledge, with a solid understanding of all areas of manufacturing and mechanical systems.

· Familiarity with the correct methods, practices, and regulations within department-specific disciplines.

· Ability to follow and understand complex regulations regarding material shipments and facility maintenance.
Work Environment Physical Demands
· An ability to work and prioritise within a high pressure, time sensitive environment while retaining a methodical approach is essential. The role will require extensive domestic & international travel and a willingness to work long and flexible hours including weekends.
· This position may require lifting heavy objects, repeated bending, squatting, and manual dexterity. The work environment is fast-paced and mentally demanding, involving machinery, race cars, 7-post and other rigs, grinding debris, and hazardous fluids. All employees must comply with the Company Health and Safety Policy and all relevant statutory health and safety legislation.
