About the job
As an Archives Assistant, you will have the opportunity to engage in all aspects of work within a busy county record office, including assisting in the search room, providing exceptional customer service, as well as cataloguing and promoting the office's work.
Any given day can often feel quite different from the next! There will be some key responsibilities likely to feature in this role:
1. Provide guidance to members of the public to ensure that they handle documents correctly and safely and supervise them to ensure that they follow this guidance.
2. Direct customer support: reply to enquiries by telephone, post and email, requiring consultation of databases and catalogues and research in original documents, indexes and electronic sources.
3. Photocopy and scan documents, including maps, if this can be done without causing damage to the document. Printing of sources on computer and microform.
4. Assist members of the public to purchase publications, DVDs & copies of documents.
5. Responsible for the security, care, and preservation of a significant quantity of historical records, including overseeing that all staff and members of the public handle this information appropriately.
Required experience and skills
6. A minimum of two A-Levels, or a relevant NVQ Level 3, or an equivalent qualification or experience that demonstrates a comparable level of numeracy and literacy.
7. Broad historical knowledge, in-depth knowledge of the history of the county of West Sussex, and wide knowledge of local and family history.
8. High IT competency including a good working knowledge of Microsoft package and operating equipment such as microfiche, computer, telephones, photocopier.
9. Excellent communication skills with the ability to confidently provide clear and concise advice and guidance to a range of customers.
10. Strong ability to interpret customer queries and requests, and to provide them with the necessary records and information.
