Job Overview
The post holder will work 28 hours a week over 4 days. They will be required to work effectively as an independent practitioner and as a member of a paediatric oncology multi-disciplinary team.
The post holder will provide skilled, excellent, specialist oncology nursing care and advice, empowering the child and their carers throughout the duration of their cancer treatment. They will be competent and confident in delivering care to the child/young person and will liaise effectively with primary treatment centres and other healthcare teams.
Main Duties of the Job

4. Ensure the training and competence of ward staff, day unit staff, and community nursing teams in relation to the care of children and young people with cancer.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
1. Ensure clinical skills are up to date to provide evidence-based, competent care for children and young people with cancer.
2. Review all paediatric oncology inpatients daily, providing support to the child and family.
3. Provide advice and support to nursing and medical staff.
4. Assist with the weekly oral chemotherapy dose adjustment telephone clinic.
5. Assist in the delivery and administration of intravenous bolus chemotherapy.
6. Complete and communicate relevant information regarding newly referred patients to the cancer services team.
7. Assist in collating information and carrying out audits for the trust clinical audit meeting.
8. Participate in home visits, where needed, to complete holistic needs assessments and explain the POSCU service.
Management and Leadership
1. Provide Paediatric Oncology training as part of the new nurse's and doctor's induction.
2. Ensure SACT competencies are completed for all nurses administering cytotoxic medication.
3. Provide advice and training in educational settings regarding caring for Paediatric Oncology patients.
4. Ensure nursing staff are competent and confident to work with the POSCU.
5. Keep nursing training registers up to date.
Communication
1. Attend the monthly POSCU Multi-Disciplinary Team meeting.
2. Support children, young people, and their families, signposting services and ensuring information is available.
3. Assist in the care of the child/young person receiving end-of-life care in the home/community setting.
4. Refer children/young people to relevant charities/organisations for support.
5. Attend the Joint Haematology/Oncology outpatient clinic with the POSCU Lead Clinician.
6. Produce a quarterly POSCU newsletter for patients.
Research and Audit
1. Participate in the completion of clinical trial paperwork.
2. Support the completion of the patient experience survey.
3. Participate in internal and external audits.
Person Specification
Clinical Skills
* Trained in administration of SACT.
* Can drive.
Experience
* At least 2 years of experience caring for children with cancer.
