Job overview
The Paediatric nursing team forms part of the Integrated Children's services at Barnet, Chase Farm and Edgware Community Hospitals and is part of the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust.
The post holder will work under the direction of the COPD manager with responsibility for the assessment of care needs for all patients, ensuring appropriately planned care is both implemented and evaluated.
He/ she is expected to work with minimal supervision and will be designated to work as part of the nursing team at Chase Farm and Edgware Hospital.
He/she will provide care at COPD without supervision to facilitate the prevention of admission or reduction in hospitalisation. He/ she will act as an effective clinical support for students.
The post holder will work as part of the COPD Nursing Team with support from the band 6 and band 7 Sister. To contribute to the assessment, planning, implementation of evidence-based care to children and their families and carers, and work in a collaborative manner with other agencies to ensure a seamless service for the children.
Circumstances may arise for the post holder to assist in providing clinical cover in all areas of the paediatric unit.
Main duties of the job
1. To work as part of the Children's Nursing Team, being directed by the team leader / band 6 in prioritising day to day work and in managing case load.
2. To provide efficient, effective and evidence-based nursing care to children and young people within the hospital and ambulatory settings.
3. To perform nursing procedures to a high standard in accordance with the Royal Free Clinical Practise Guidelines and policies.
4. To be competent in the recognition and management of life-threatening emergencies in children and be able to escalate accordingly.
5. To participate in child protection procedures including attendance at case conferences with the team leader / band 6.
6. To be responsible for highlighting and identification of child protection concerns to the team leader/ child protection lead and auctioning concerns through child protection procedures.
7. To participate in writing reports for case conferences and to attend child protection supervision in line with Trust policies and procedures with the support of the team leader / band 6.
8. To maintain confidentiality and safekeeping of records.
9. To organise workload in line with clinical priorities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. To participate in the assessment, planning and provision of skilled nursing care in negotiation with the child and their families / carers.
2. To work in partnership with parents and other carers, empowering them to safely care for their child within the community setting.
3. To support children and their families by linking with the statutory, voluntary, and associated services available on an individual basis.
4. To ensure effective liaison with other agencies, as deemed appropriate, relevant to the child's needs.
5. To liaise closely with the MDT both in the community and the hospital settings to provide a holistic approach to meeting the needs of the child and the family.
6. To act as an advocate for the children and their families.
7. To participate in the safe and effective transfer of patients to adult services with the support of the team leader / band 6.
8. To teach children and their families using evidence-based practise ensuring that the teaching is relevant and up to date. Ensure teaching programmes are tailored to meet the needs of the family.
9. To promote healthy lifestyles by using opportunities to deliver health education and to participate in relevant local events.
10. To assist in the development of nursing policies and individualised care plans, allowing children to have their care delivered outside a hospital setting, and support the parents/ carers to deliver that care where appropriate.
11. To report clinical and non-clinical incidents in line with Trust and departmental risk management policies.
12. To assist with the development of policies with non-paediatric colleagues, which facilitate smooth transition to adult services.
13. To participate in the governance of the department in areas including risk management, research and audit activities.
14. To adapt, and quickly respond to changes in service, patients, or departmental need.

Education & professional Qualifications
* Evidence of recent and ongoing professional development
* Recognized teaching or mentorship qualification or working towards
Experience
* Post registration experience working in an acute hospital setting
* Awareness of current professional nursing issues
* Demonstrates sound knowledge of infection control standards
