Maternity Support Worker - Rotational Maternity Services

Job overview
The primary role of the Maternity Support Worker (MSW) is to assist, support and work in collaboration with the midwife and the wider multidisciplinary team to provide a safe and holistic approach to women-centred care.
The role includes working within local and national guidelines that enable individuals to provide safe and excellent care to our service users. There will be training and development opportunities for post holders who wish to progress within this career.
The post holder will proactively, consistently and meaningfully demonstrate the Trust values in their day-to-day interactions with colleagues and service users.
Main duties of the job
The MSW will work alongside Midwives and other health professionals in the provision of safe and excellent care to women and their babies. The MSW will receive relevant training and once deemed competent to do so, will have an array of skills to support midwives, including:
* Ensuring the clinical areas are stocked, clean and ready for use, ensuring equipment is safe and PAT tested.
* Clinical observations of mother and baby.
* Venepuncture and cannulation.
* Feeding support including breast and bottle.
* Diabetes care.
* Promotion of health education.
* Emergency care including newborn life support.
The MSW will work on a rotational basis gaining clinical competence around the maternity unit, enabling them to become multi-skilled and high-functioning MSWs.
There is an opportunity to undertake the MSW apprenticeship through Dynamic.

Person specification
Qualifications
* NVQ level 2 or equivalent.
* Maths and English GCSE Grade A-C (or equivalent).
* Care certificate or willing to complete this upon employment.
* NVQ level 3 or equivalent.
Experience
* Previous experience working with members of the public.
* Previous experience in a maternity setting and aware of the principles of woman and family centred care.
Knowledge
* The applicant possesses generalised knowledge to inform their understanding of the job role and specific knowledge related to tasks or activities within their scope of role. They must demonstrate an awareness of contemporary public health and health promotion initiatives, including where legal and ethical issues are relevant to their scope of role.
Skills
* Ability to communicate in a variety of settings with service users and their families, with varying levels of understanding.
* Self-motivated.
* Flexibility and team participation.
* Basic IT skills - ability to use keyboard or willingness to develop.
* Demonstrates effective application of problem solving and planning skills and a broad skill base related to their practice.
* Understanding of quality and change in the clinical setting.
* Familiar with Microsoft Office and Excel.
