Specialist Nurse within the Northern Neonatal Transport Service are accountable for assessing, planning, delivering & evaluating high quality patient care on the neonatal unit & during the transfer process. This includes:
* Providing effective support to parents throughout the care pathway.
* Acting as role model & be involved with the transport team in order to support the training & induction of new team members to ensure they become a fully competent transport nurse.
* Working with professionals from other NHS trusts in the co-ordination of the safe transfer of sick & preterm infants.
* Engaging in the development of the Transport Service throughout the Northern Neonatal Network.
* Communicating effectively with other professionals utilising all available mediums e.g. spoken word, written documentation & call conferencing etc.
* Being flexible in the recognition that transport working patterns can occasionally be unpredictable.

Main duties of the job
The Newcastle Neonatal Service is a busy, vibrant & expanding service that offers a variety of experiences in Neonatal Care including Surgery, Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery.
NNeTS operates 24/7 retrieving & repatriating infants within the Northern Region & beyond. Staff work on a rota that includes nights, weekends & bank holidays. There are approximately 400 acute transfers a year & 400 nurse-led repatriation transfers a year. There is a comprehensive training package & opportunities to attend conferences & study days.
We are delighted to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, enthusiastic & ambitious individual with significant neonatal intensive care skills, experience & QIS to train as a Specialist Nurse within the Northern Neonatal Transport Service.
Successful candidates must have experience in caring for sick babies who may require ventilatory support, nitric oxide therapy & therapeutic hypothermia. Candidates will also join & make a significant contribution to a well-integrated team providing tertiary neonatal care. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop areas of interest & expertise. In addition to the challenges of the role, you will be expected to be involved in teaching & educating junior staff, as well as being involved in research & audit.
Job responsibilities
Candidates without neonatal transport experience will be appointed as a Band 5 during the training period, once they have successfully completed competencies & objectives within 8 weeks they will transition to a Band 6 Specialist Nurse role within the Northern Neonatal Transport Team.
This post is suitable for a motivated individual with a keen interest in neonatal retrieval, someone who wishes to develop & extend specialised skills & knowledge within our dynamic regional Neonatal Transport Team.
Job Purpose
Band 5
* This is a development post working under the supervision of an experienced transport nurse and medical staff.
* Accountable for assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating high quality patient care.
* Provide effective support to both patient and carers throughout their care pathway.
* Act as role model, teacher and supervisor for junior staff and students, participating in mentor and preceptorship programmes.
* To abide by Trust policies and procedures.
* Provide support for and depending on experience deputise for nurse in charge in their absence.
* Act as patient advocate in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code.
* Work collaboratively as an effective member of MDT.
Band 6
The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust define a nurse specialist as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of role is to provide guidance and support based on advanced level knowledge to patients, carers and health professionals concerning a specific disease/condition.

All Criteria for Band 6
* Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements for mentorship if relevant to role.
* Evidence of on-going continuous professional development.
* Knowledge and understanding of relevant NHS policy or project specific policy context.
* Has understanding / experience of adult / child safeguarding.
* Effective report writing skills.
* Able to work independently and as a member of a team.
* Effective organisation and time management skills.
* Current driving licence if relevant to role.
* Some post registration experience within related specialist area of practice.
* Extended clinical practice underpinned by training and assessment.
* Registered Nurse (appropriate to branch).
* Current NMC registration.
* Diploma plus specialist qualifications / experience within specialist area; prepared to take degree level study.
* Change management skills and involvement in project work.
* Research or audit experience.
* Evidence of contribution towards education and training programmes.
* Degree in health related subject.

* Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of ongoing professional development.

* Excellent speciality knowledge.
* Understanding of professional and current issues in Neonatal nursing.
* Basic IT skills.
* Excellent neonatal clinical skills.
* Experience in Neonatal Intensive care.
* Registered Nurse (appropriate to branch).
* NMC registration.
* Diploma/Degree in Nursing (completed or willingness to undertake) or equivalent experience.
* Relevant clinical skills relating to the specialty e.g. cannulation, IV drug administration.
* APLS/EPLS/NLS Course.
