Job overview
We are a very busy Emergency Department, covering a diverse population, and we are a Major Trauma Unit. We also have a dedicated 24-hour Paediatric area.
We accept patients who self-present, arrive by ambulance or via Helimed.
We cover Burnley Urgent Treatment Centre, Accrington Minor Injuries Unit along with the ED and Urgent Treatment Centre at Blackburn.
We have recently introduced an appointment system in our Urgent Treatment Centres/ Minor Injuries Unit.
We are looking for self-motivated nurses to help take the department forward – you must be committed, flexible and approachable with substantial ED nursing experience. The role includes unsocial hours including weekends and rotation onto nights.
Main duties of the job
You will have a strong interest in developing new staff, and a proactive approach to delivering a high standard of evidence-based care is essential. You must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding of current issues in emergency care and be able to translate this into quality nursing.
We value experience and skills learnt elsewhere and will work with you to enable those skills to be utilised and developed further.
As a Junior Sister/Charge Nurse you will assist in promoting change and developing the area.
You will be responsible for leading the team, and the co-ordination of areas of the department - Majors, Minors, Resus and Urgent Intervention.
You will be supported by a team of Matrons, Senior Sisters, and Practice Educators.
There will be the opportunity for further study including Leadership courses, ALS/APLS/TNCC.
Working for our organisation
Our Emergency Department at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital provides care for both adults and children who attend with serious illness or injury. Due to our large catchment area, we currently provide for approximately 154,000 attendees per year.
The department has an 8 bedded resuscitation and 43 major cubicles.
The department is classified as a trauma unit and we have a purpose-built helipad onsite that will bring our most serious patients to the department via North West Air Ambulance.
We have a new, state-of-the-art staff facility for staff changing with access to a shower as well as a new staff room, education room and wellbeing retreat for all staff.
We also have 2 Urgent Care Centres that are part of the emergency department and 2 Minor Injuries Units which are located at Accrington Victoria Hospital and Rossendale Health Centre.

Leadership of the team.
Co-ordination of Resus, Majors, Urgent Treatments Centre's and Urgent Intervention.
Manchester Triage.
Minor injuries - Wound Care, Dressings, Suturing, Plastering etc.
Knowledge and experience of each speciality - Resuscitation/Intensive Care, Medical, Surgical, Orthopaedics, Gynaecology, Frailty, Paediatrics, Minor Injury and Illness, Major Trauma, ENT, Max Fax, Mental Health, Learning Disabilities.
Advanced Life Support.
Advanced Paediatric Life Support.
Major Incident and Decontamination.
Streaming of patients to the most appropriate pathway.
Supporting Junior Staff.
Supporting the Nurse in Charge.
Staff Training.
Audits.
Person specification
Qualifications
* 1st Level Registered Nurse
* Advanced Life Support Skill
* Manchester Triage / Initial Assessment Skill
* Diploma in Emergency Nursing or equivalent
* ATLS / TNCC/APLS
* Teaching / Assessing Qualification
Experience
* Significant experience within an ED setting/or equivalent
* Proven development of own skills and clinical knowledge
Communication Skills
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
