To perform venepuncture and veneole (capillary sampling) blood collection procedures, which involve the piercing of veins or the slicing of veneoles. This is to extract blood samples from patients in a manner suitable for analytical, therapeutic, or diagnostic testing. Responsibilities include coordinating activities in varied locations such as hospital wards, outpatient clinics, and community locations.
Work with management to maintain and update policies and procedures that lead to service improvements. Investigate untoward incidents, including patient complaints, and make recommendations to reduce re-occurrence. Ensure the health, safety, and welfare of yourself and the patient, and that Health and Safety procedures are followed by all staff.
Ensure that staff are fully conversant with obtaining lawful consent and that consent is obtained in all instances. Effectively manage contingencies that arise during the day-to-day running of phlebotomy services. Represent the service at meetings and promote good working relationships across internal and external boundaries, being the first point of contact for Phlebotomy. Collect and collate evidence of work-based practice for periodic review.
Collect data/information for internal/external audit purposes. Independently manage your workload and effectively delegate work to others. Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, and staff of all ages, genders, sexual orientations, cultures, or physical abilities in a non-discriminatory manner, overcoming communication barriers.
Identify, select, and utilize a suitable site for blood collection using personal judgment. Obtain blood samples from patients to a standard fit for laboratory testing while ensuring minimum distress or discomfort. Act as an expert in this field of practice and create an environment suitable for the needs of both patients and staff. Promote a critical and analytical approach to service delivery and implement changes to improve systems when required.
Respond to and investigate complaints, ensuring appropriate escalation actions are taken. Through appraisal, identify individuals' strengths and weaknesses, providing constructive feedback and support to maximize their contributions to the team and their personal development. The job holder will be expected to work across all Trust sites, including non-Trust premises, as required.
This list is not exhaustive, and the changing needs of the service may require the development of other appropriate tasks and skills, which will be discussed with the post holder in advance. The Phlebotomy service of UHN NHS Foundation Trust is located on several sites, and the post holder may be required to work at alternative sites as directed by the Phlebotomy Manager. Compliance with corporate policies and procedures is required, and these will be discussed during induction.
